Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

DH WILL be going to doctor again today. Last night (9pm) discovered most of his foot has what appears to be Cellulitis. He marked the red edge and watched it for 1.5 hours. Didn't really appear to be increasing, but is very swollen and said it felt like 'road rash'. Refused to go to ER or call Dr office last night. Said it wasn't an emergency. Boy! He frustrates me so!! I have to work, so his DM will be taking him in yet again.
MEN!!, an infection is an emergency, can develop in to something nasty fast!
Hope all goes well and DM can get him in, He is probably afraid they will make him stay, Hospitals are not nice places to be, but necessary!

rather foggy out the AM, plan for the day is to get to the hardware store early, buy paint and get the front room and hall way done. Pulled weeds out of a VERY neglected garden, haven't touched it much in 2 or 3yrs,.may use round up on the last 1/2 don't think I have the strength to pull all that up, and there are to many roots to till it in. I am afraid it well cause an even bigger problem if I till? would like to be able to plant next year.
Roosters are calling even louder no that it is getting a little light
Have a great day all, Cold is coming

The chicks are getting big (and smelly!) in the basement! I have a sneaking suspicion that at least one of my splash wyandottes is a roo, if not all 3 of them.

The one with the poppy butt is improving, and hopefully continues to improve. DS's birthday party was a hit, and now that we're through that we're going to try to get the outside coop winterized the rest of the way (some weather stripping, blocking off a few openings, plastic-ing the run) and get them ALL moved out there in about a week or so. Some of the chicks are still pretty tiny, so they won't get let out into the run until they acclimate to the outdoor temps.

Got pictures of one very nice 8pt buck out behind the house, along with 2 decent 6pts. AND the huge does with all of their fawns. Looks like the early sping did them good for putting on weight!

Hoping that DH can put a doe in the freezer and that 8pt on the wall.

don't seal it too good! you need ventilation to keep the moisture down to prevent your birds from getting frost bite.

Yes Glad, leave some of those little cracks and openings to allow fresh air flow. Lots of little openings are better than 1 big one, they allow constant airflow without allowing big drafts.

My little broody frizzle is sitting tight on the eggs - she looks like a little black fuzzy pancake.

Oh we aren't going to seal it up by ANY means! It's got venting in all of the overhangs, AND a big opening on the prevailing-wind side (and the opposite side). We're going to put plastic over that prevailing wind side, and if we need to take it off, we definately will. We'll leave the protected side open.....I just don't want the wind whistling through there since we're in a field and all.

There is a better way and it is easier.

Layer 6-7 sheets of overlapping newspaper on the bed and cover with mulch, soil, leaves or straw or coop bedding. Let it sit like that over winter and it will smother all the weeds without harming the soil organisms or adding poison to the ground.

Round-Up has a half-life that lingers in the soil for months and roto-tilling re-distrbutes the seed bank. I only roto-till if I can get new plant material in the ground right away to out compete the weeds and keep up with manual maintenance for the immediate time afterwards.

Just my un-solicited advice.

You are so right! I made the mistake of killing my weeds in my garden with round-up quite a few years ago. I had no-grow spots right where I used it the next year. Then after tilling it that fall, weak-growing areas surrounding the no-grow areas. No more round up for me in my garden. I like your newspaper idea. I plan on putting the chickens in there in the spring to devour all the weeds, weed seeds, and bug larvae before I plant. Let them do my tilling :) It's fenced in so normally they don't get in there.

Hi everyone!!!

Brethren49619- when my daughter was born they told me she would not live past age two now she just had her first baby, oh and they also said that if she lived that she would be slow in slow she graduated 7th in her class without even trying. So doc's don't know everything.

Tap love the purse I need to get back to sewing.

Anyone out there have some blue orpingtons? I need some.

Kimmie

What a day it was, eh?
It was still 78 degrees when I stopped about 1/2 hour ago.

Grass was mowed, fertilized, sidewalk swept clear of leaves and the flat bed trailer unloaded (finally). The coop was rearranged for better roosting space and moved the nest box so they stop sleeping in it. Sleeping in the box just started last week.

Tractor started and I hauled some wood but then it refused to start again. Battery is on the charger for over-night. I hope it recovers, I need to use the tractor tomorrow.
