The DNR will do necropsies on raptors. Keep it cold but do not freeze it.
Some of the more common causes of abnormal behavior and death in Raptors are poisoning by lead or rodenticides consumed while eating prey, trauma, and infection.
What a shame.

Do they molt after breeding 'season' to grow new feathers.......or just preen them to look good again?

They undergo continuous feather replacement, so those damaged and lost will be replaced over the course of a few months. But preening does wonders with what is there.
