Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

oh my!, I never even thought of that....my neighbor has a lawn treatment every year, although I haven't seen them apply it yet this year. Plus he regularly goes around his lawn with other stuff( I don't ask ), and as we live next to a field that is farmed with rotational crops I know they apply various nasties too. I never even thought of migrating worms/bugs

With all that in mind I guess there's not much I can do is there?

Unfortunately if that's what it is, then no there isn't much you can do but provide lots of clean water, quality feed, and scratch areas as far away from contamination as possible.

any one have a suggestion? I have a hen with a limp, sad to say I may have caused it trying to catch her when she was broody or she did it trying to get out of the separated fenced area that I had put her in trying to break her of her broody state, she did escape once and I have no idea how she managed so she may have hurt her leg then. if it is out of the socket, or something like that do you think I could get it back by holding her by her feet upside down?

I have one too!
She had a bad limp last summer, after a fight with newbies,
I isolated her for a few days in a crate to force her to rest it,
which helped some but she still limped for a few weeks after that.
Wish I had noted last year which leg it was.

I checked her out last night, no sign of injury that I could see, stiffness seems to be at the hip/pelvis.
No bugs seen either, but her skin around her vent and abdomen is bright red.

I will probably put her in a crate tonite for a few days....
......and check the other birds for bugs and this inflamed skin thing.

I'm dealing with a mite problem here, ugh! Check out your bird at dark with a flashlight, and treat the group if you find any. Pale combs and weakness can also be anemia, among other things. mary

No snowflake that is unlikely to reduce a dislocation. Does she use the leg at all?
yes she is limping , very noticeable, noticed she went to bed early last night, other then the limp she seems OK,

woops, ment to coment.
have not noticed any mites, I use ivermechten or some other topical and spray the perches and cracks in the coop with liquid 7's. I sprayed the coop down with home defemse yesterday when it was empty and all cleaned out

Brett and I go out with an old nylon stocking full of permethrin dust and "powder puff" their backs and bottoms after they go to bed... roosters too! It comes out nice but not billowy cloud of dust thank goodness

We wear masks and small head lamps, but the powder puff treatment really does the trick! Easy to do when they are on the roost too (give an extra swipe around the roost while we are at it.

Nine cute chicks hatched yesterday, with a broody hen! Barnyard mixes, maybe a couple of Chanteclers. Most will need new homes a bit later. It's going to be interesting figuring out the genetics; BC Marans or white Chantecler sires, with white Chanti, SS, and BLR Wyandotte hens. One is blue, so definitely Wyandotte- Marans cross. Others white, cream, and one smokey. Pictures later. Mary
