CRAZY Rooster,,, I have a nutty rooster (my Spanish) he likes to sit in the nesting box. I didn't kick him out so I am not sure if he was warming eggs or just checking out the view, I Know he wasn't laying eggs

My pet rooster had a thing for nests too. He decided it was his "duty" to build nests. The first year i had him, a couple other roos that i had bought thinking they were hens (youngsters). He spent the whole winter making nests in the hay i used to do the deep bedding Once i got hens he made them comfy nests, sang to them and guarded them while they were laying

I have been missing him and my cocoa a lot lately Can't seem to shake the melancholy.

we do not have water on our property but have lakes and streams near by. we are seeing so few dear this yr it is scary. early this summer a farmer was on the news and said if the corn does not get enough rain it could become poisonous, as the fertilizer does not leave the plant. We have corn fields all around us an NO dear. DD lives in the city, near the river she has a heard of 7 that visit her yard almost daily, 6 doe, 1 buck. NO corn. how much corn are the dear in your area eating???

That's interesting about the corn. I was just saying to DH the other day that I'm not seeing any dear on our road which is really unusual. Normally at this time of year we see them every night as we go past the cornfields just leading to our house. So far I've only seen one in the cornfield and she seemed kind of small to me.

Try animal control for that city. When I worked at the Humane Society, animal control would bring road kill to be cremated with the euthanized animals.

no... call the DNR.

Though, they are aware of it and will not dispose of the animal if you find one.

yes Brethren I did get my certification, that was in March, I have not tested any birds, although my certification is good till 2015. The serum is expensive don't remember off hand. Will have to check on line when I have time. or call MSU?

And you said that Chicken Grandma also took the class, so she is certified also? Isn't she located further north? I'll have to contact her...

90% of our leaves are out of the trees in the past week. Yesterday was the third day this week that I blew the leaves out of the yard. I still have some to do, but figure most of that is taken care of now. Maybe one more day later on. Also put in a couple of more posts for the second run, and dropped hay for horses for most of the week. I checked on the broody mama who had one chick hatched by Thursday night. She hatched out the other one also, so now have two more chickens. So glad I didn't have eggs in an incubator, for I just wouldn't have had any time to take care of them. The chicks are white silkie (Mama) and a white easter egger (Papa). Had cold pizza for dinner and went to bed at 8, woke up at midnight with a major migraine and pain in my neck and shoulders. Thank goodness for DH's prescription migraine meds. Mostly gone, so now I will be able to go to work today, 8-6, before and after taking care of animals. And my hours are being cut at work because it has been so slow for the past # of weeks, so looking into getting a second job. Don't know how I will fit it in, but with the loss of DH's income, just can't afford my hours cut now.
Here's a pic of the new chicks. They will probably be re-homed once hardy enough to be on their own. Let me know if anyone's interested.

Brethren- that is so tempting! As you know I want a couple silkies for my daughter Doesn't matter if they're crossed - she wants a chicken with a poof on its head (as she calls it!) Just got our chicks outof the brooder and into the coop last week so I'll have them in the grow out pen for about 8 weeks, so I don't have a safe place to take on any young ones for quite a while. Sorry to hear that on top of all you have going on that you may need to take on a second job. If I hear of anything in our area I can let you know - feel free to pm me what you're looking for. And seriously, let me know if I can help you in any way.

I have a five month old Seabright "pullet". I do not know much about this breed, at all. Looks like a pullet, small dark, greyish comb, no wattles to speak of, but started crowing today. A lot. lol. Do the comb and wattles come in later than other breeds? Any input would be welcome. Will try to get a picture, later. Thanks!

Well I think all my Welsh Harlequins are drakes...anybody interested in a few? I have 3 available, I am going to keep one and try for hens in the spring. They are just over 6 weeks old.

I have pumpkin-banana cheesecake in the oven and the house smells wonderful. I hope it tastes as good as it smells.

Girl dogs are outside on hawk guard duty. I saw him sitting on the fence just up the street.

Since male seabrights are "hen feathered" it is difficult to determine the sex at a glance. However, the comb the the males is much more prominent and should be apparent by 16 weeks.
