Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I forgot to mention that the new girls have reached POL, It doesn't matter how long you have been keeping chickens, that first egg is always a thrill.

More wood cutting later today. Any helpers?
Another one of my buffs have started up as well. Sure hope the rest of them get going as well as my egg supply is pretty down right now. Been so hot my older girls just haven't been producing that well. Anybody have any good suggestions of something that could help jump start them back up??

Got mom out to the barn yesterday, she's doing a lot better with her new hip. And today she had the suture and tape off at the doctors.

I gave mine a dose of chick saver vitamins/electrolytes during a 5 day heat wave, seemed to give them a boost.
1/2 teaspoon of the powder in a quart of water, dispensed in an open one gallon waterer.
Quart of solution for 25 birds in late afternoon, after they'd had their ice cubes in large shallow tray.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Picked up a bunch of that at TSC today, and then a few other things because its Dollar Days there and well, Stuff. Got that all set up in a gallon drinker in the coop there. That also might help keep the **** sparrows from dropping over dead in the coop as well. I put a curtain up over the pop door to keep them from going into the coop, but they're still getting in, but not having a lot of luck with getting out. if somebody doesn't let them out, they just tend to bounce around inside of the coop and either they're dehydrating out because I normally just use a nipple water in the coop, or they're panicking and are flying right into the hardwear cloth full on. Think I had 2 in there today dead and a few others still bouncing around.

It seems the rodent situation around here is out of control. There are tunnels everywhere and I can't catch the rotten little creatures. I've been using box traps and there must be something wrong with them. Does anyone have good mouse killing ideas? I really don't have the time or patience to set all the standard mouse traps every night. They have destroyed one of my insulated coops. I'm about ready to adopt a coop cat in hopes of having a mouser around.

My cat takes care of most of my rodent issues. The only problem is that he sometimes brings them into the house to play with before killing and I end up having to clean them up (he doesn't eat them, so it's not too messy). The other morning he snuck in with a baby squirrel, which was playing dead until my cat dropped him. Luckily my Dane finished it off like a good hunting dog (very little mess) and left it for me to clean up... if only I could train him to take it back outside...

Hello I am from Michigan, of course, south of Grand Rapids and I was hoping anyone could give me chicken suggestions. I joined last year but haven't really done anything on here until now. I'm FINALLY GETTING CHICKENS!!! Soooo any suggestions on chickens that would survive in southern Michigan? Thx:cd:jumpy

Quote: Remember to only mix up only what you will use in a day........
.....I put the extra powder from the opened pack(which makes a gallon) in a tightly sealed bottle for later use.

If electrolyte solution is offered, make sure the birds have access to plain water as well
They did...only made up a quart so everyone got just a bit.....
.....and put it out after they had finished their 'ice cube melt' .....so they all were hydrated enough not to gorge on the EL solution.
