Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So do easter egger roosters not look like a normal rooster, and by that I mean even at ful grown do they not look bigger and more majestic with longer tails and brighter colors and a larger comb?

I have been studying my flock of hatchery chicks and they are around 8 weeks old and none of them look like roosters, none have larger more red combs, or are crowing, or seem to bully the others?

Is this too early?

I have Isa browns, white leghorns, EEs and Plymouths I think, with a couple of others I am not sure about.

Sarah gave me some black cochin bantys and there seem to be 2 roosters in that bunch of 6, but they are so stinking cute, they crack me up.

My white EE "Ollie" (Olive colored legs) was a chest bumper from very early on, about 2 weeks or even earlier. He has a great swoop of a tail, large, proud, and the lead rooster of them all. Matured first, and has the largest comb. I think it really has to do with the hatchery mixing of breeds to create the EE. Doesn't seem to be very reliable in outcome. Here's a pic of Ollie at about 9 weeks. His tail is probably about double the size currently, now 25 weeks.

As for crowing, my Araucana chicks started crowing before they were 4 weeks old. Ollie was crowing at about 6 weeks, Hooter a few weeks later. Each has been different, and I think there is a difference within the different breeds as well. But that's just me. Maybe Ollie didn't start until later because there weren't any other birds here (they were my first) and the Araucana were listening and learning to return the call? Each in their own time, just like when they are ready to stat laying - whenever they are ready! HaHa

Thank you for the links - I will definately read them.
Hi chicken grandma! Thanks again for all the advice getting started in June :)

So now I have some reading to do - someday I'll figure out what "wheaten" is!!!

We knew it was going to happen. It has each year of my life. You know what I'm talking about. I hesitate to use its name. Perhaps if we ignore it it will just go away. Its arrival in October isn't rare it's just unwelcomed. However, you are welcome to join me for coffee. The pot is always fresh, cups are in the cupboard, so why don't you grab one and we'll sit a spell. We could talk about spring with its newly hatched chicks, blossoming flowers, and garden expectations. We just won't mention the white stuff on the grass.

I'll join you for another cup Opa, but this will be the start of my second pot. There isn't any of that white s*** up here, but the radar shows that there is/was east of here as close as Cadillac earlier.
Loving the pictures of the little chicks, and am enjoying my new little ones in the coop.
Have the day off work today (at the paid job anyway) but need to drive my DH to order materials for a project that needs to be done before the real s*** hits the ground. At least I will be able to spend some time with him, just the two of us. Looking forward to that! Reminders to always appreciate what you have, because you never know what the future holds.

wooooooooo! Hope everyone's fairing the weather ok....... we had a few trees down in the road this morning. Mostly dead fall, but the way it was hollering last night, I expected more damage. The siding on the house was fluttering so much I thought we'd been cleared for take off! and the vent........the vent to may stove sounded like someone was taking a lid of a metal pan, REALLY LOUDLY ........on off on off on ....off on off on.......ALL NIGHT LONG!!! ugh! THAT has got to GO!

Love all the chicken pictures.

Those roosters! I have yet to figure out what the heck that color is called, but it is the color my boy was. He had the prettiest beetle green, and under his hackles he had little green diamonds..........

We were told that our boy that looks like that is a silver duck wing.

Mama looks pretty mad here, but she has been a very good broody.
She has let me do whatever I wanted/needed the whole time she has been on the nest and with the chicks.
Occasionally a little peck or some grumbling, but otherwise nothing.
I love mama's face.

Morning. I don't care for the white stuff before Halloween but the hunter's will be happy for the cold weather. This is from my son's trail cam. They are at two different times and after much discussion with several guys they think really are two different deer. I thought my son was going to pass out just over the pictures. I'm not sure he would actually be able to shoot one if it showed up.
