Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Welcome! And congrats on the first eggs, love it! Chickens are pullets and cockerels until they are one year of age, then they are hens and cock birds. It doesn't matter if they are laying eggs or not. Nice big brown egg! Mary

Ah, thanks for clarifying! I had thought they became hens once they started to lay eggs.

I am rather scared of RIR's my brother has a small flock and the are the meanest things.. I agree it is my goal to be totally self sustaining for my family, my husband works 12h shifts after 8y in the Corp and I am home with the younger boys and the farm teaching myself all I can about gardening and milking and preserving..

we need more with that mindset around to teach good values to the younger generation so much is being lost these days it's a shame

Production Reds sold at the hatcheries and feed stores under the name RIR are MEAN!!! True bred to Standard RIR you get from a breeder. They are different and I have only had ONE cantankerous Cockerel because HE was the backup for my breeder cockerel and penned by himself. He wanted out to mate like the other he could see but since the main WAS headed to the competition and was my best I didn't want any testosterone injuries. A friend who chicken sat for me when I went downstate to my kids hit him with a stick to keep him in when he watered and fed. Before that no problems EVER in all my years of breeding and raising lots every year. ;)

Was out in the garden looking around this evening and was pleasantly surprised to find these out there.
