Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That or maybe they might have crowed once, and the top roo sat on them and explain that they are to never ever ever do that again or else.

@wannahomestead if your older cockbird is a good one, keep him and eat all the cockerels.
Not sure why you'd need and extra male, can't remember your flock details....
.....but if you do keep one just pick one (eeniemeenieminiemo) don't over-think it.
Good luck with your slaughtering.

I would keep the largest, all else being equal. None of them will produce big meaty birds, even compared to your RR cock. I do like to keep a 'spare' cockerel in case something happens to Big Daddy, but is this youngster going to be a good flock sire? Maybe better to raise some other chicks next spring and keep a cockerel who fits better with your flock plans. Mary

Well I got busy today and the roosters gained a reprieve for now. I'm ok with that though, because I will weigh them again and see if there have been any weight changes. It'll be interesting data.

Hope everyone is doing well since I popped in about 150 posts ago. Loved the story, Raz, about the cell phone.

Cool to hear that the cremani's are making their way into MI. When I started out in chickens they were pretty much just a myth, complete with misinformation. I don't know that I have any need for them, not sure my kids would eat black chicken and their eggs are just eggs, but they're neat birds. I'm still trying to find the elusive blue wheaten ameraucana, cayuga ducks and maybe a couple geese for eating (my in-laws are pressuring me to give them a Christmas goose one of these years).

Managed to put six bourbon red turkeys in the freezer and ten freedom rangers, before it got too cold. I've been a busy butcher. But I've found that Thanksgiving isn't so special when you can eat heritage turkey any day of the year.

Now, after getting a 1/4 steer from farmerboy (Daron), my freezer is so full I have to empty it into boxes just to find anything. I think we're set for a while. And happiness is getting a load of straw for the barn. Did that today. We had a load of driveway stone blocking the barn ramp all summer so as soon as we got that spread, I was ordering straw. Everyone will be warm this winter, in their beds. Of course, the sheep are so woolly right now, they're already set.

Anyway, I can't leave without saying that I placed a new sale in my etsy shop. 15% off orders of $10 or more, now through Jan. 31st. code: HOLIDAY2016 I've got wool roving, hand spun yarns, feed sack totes, handmade soap and a couple of hand-knit hats. The goat milk soap is made from Daron's raw goat's milk. https://www.etsy.com/shop/LadyRSanti [/shamelessplug] We all have to survive.

At our place all the birds are mostly free range. So it turns out that heritage turkeys do not do well with free range. They have fallen in love with the neighbor's chickens. I have found the a 1/4 mile away. Yesterday they were back to the neighbor's. I was worried because their German shepherd has killed our birds before. When I chased them home I talked to the neighbor and she said they took after her dog and he's terrified of them.

So knowing what they are like is anyone interested in some heritage turkeys? Reasonably priced. 4 months old, a trio of penciled palms and golden nargansett toms. I may be convinced to get rid of a pair of g.n. But I hope at this point just keeping a couple will work.
