Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi Brandy, welcome, glad you joined in

My first broody hen is on day 5 or 6 and still staying put! I thought she only had 4 eggs but checked today and she's got 4. They will be buff Orpington silkie mixes so in excited to see what they look like. The dad is the silkie and I was pretty sure he was getting the job done in spit of the size difference, but candled one today to be sure. I can see veins and a darker blob so I think we're good! So excited!

Welcome to the newbies!

Getting the incubator tested today to set eggs tomorrow hopefully.
Doing a hatch for a buddy with their equipment, the turner was glitchy, think I fixed it.
May start another hatch after a couple weeks in my incubator.

Hi Brandy! Welcome! I have someone eating eggs too. Trying to figure out who it is.
You have some birds I've never heard of. I'm going to have to go look them up. :)

Sorry you had to put your RIR to sleep.

I am vegetarian, so I don't eat chickens, only the eggs on occasion. I bought them mainly to be live composters for my garden, and the eggs are just another byproduct that I can either use and/or sell.

@GardenJen77 Welcome! I was new here last year, and have found everyone to be very friendly, and a wealth of knowledge.

On a more sober note, I sent my RIR rooster to freezer camp this morning. :( He attacked my mom twice, and he was really hard on my girls, so it was time. But still a little sad as he was a very pretty bird and I loved to hear him crow. I keep telling myself how good he will taste with home-made egg noodles like my Grandma used to make.
Sorry you had to put your RIR to sleep.

One of our buff Orpingtons went broody (she's a year old) and up and left the nest at week two! So I HAD to fire up the incubator! And you can't have just five eggs in an incubator....Four hatched already and are living in my laundry room.... I don't know what I'll do when the other 35 hatch

Might spend part of spring break cleaning up the garage, lol. And praying for warmer weather! Dumb hen...

Does anyone here know when do turkey eggs tend to become viable here in Michigan? I have 3 hens, and 1 tom that are almost a year old, and I'm getting eggs daily but unsure if they're fertile. I would like to hatch some poults but want to make sure they're fertile so I'm not wasting eggs. I've tried the cracking one open to look for the bullseye in the yolk, but for some reason turkey eggs seem to be more difficult to see this. With my chicken eggs it was very obvious. Thanks

Well my new Border Collie didn't kill any chickens when I free ranged them today, tried to round them up once. That was pretty cool. He is only 4 months, so still a baby. :)
Belle, our toy Aussie Shepherd does the same thing with my girls. Might work a little better for you with your Collie simply because it will be bigger than our 9 pound fuzz ball. She's really not much bigger than the hens themselves and I think she would be a lot better about it if she was another 5 pounds bigger and not in the fat way.

You could incubate a few to see if they start developing.
