oh it was. I felt so bad because she was so sweet before they attacked her. Then to spend so much time to get her better, intergrate her back into the flock, to find her like that...was terrible. I only asked because she only wanted to hang out with this particular hen (who raised her) and when momma hen decided to brood again, she would stuff herself in the nest box at night with her which didn't seem to be a problem. During the day, however, not one hen gets near that nestbox. It was all very strange and very sad. That was my only loss. My girls braved the heat this summer brilliantly but I think I was a little smarter this time around too.
