Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Tractor supply almost got me again today. They had GLW pullets and welsummer pullets. I kept myself in control and didn’t buy them. Got home and was texting DH, congratulating myself on NOT buying more chicks and HE says, “well I would have gotten them. I’ll check on my way home from work and see if they still have them.”

I have 34 chicks in my growout coop(most of which I will be selling next month). I have 19 more coming the first week of April, and here is my darling husband stopping to get MORE chicks when at the start of the year HE was the one who wanted me to get 10 ISAs and 6 of something else and that was it.

Now, if those chicks today would have been $1/ea, I would have gotten a bunch.

When you get them off the perch (after dark, as suggested above), do a quick grab of both legs at once (I do this one-handed), then if the bird is really agitated let them hang upside down until they stop struggling. Then use your other hand underneath their chest, raise them and pin their wings to their body with both your hands.
Remember not to compress either their chest or their abdomen tightly. Since birds do not have a diaphragm, compressing their abdomen will prevent them from breathing well.

They're here :jumpy!! Miss Jean Broody first time momma did great job :love

This lavender orp roo has fit in right away. The hens are lining up and squatting. It's like the lines at the Secretary of State.
The flip side is that now the neighbor's wife keeps sending me pictures and/or links to free roosters in the area. Pass. I just hope that people don't find out that I have chickens or where I live. I don't want people to be dropping off animals at the dead end I live on.

Mariner (Mare) is doing well. He is tolerating short periods of petting and is pretty vocal.
Bender is doing better. He comes out of his safe box more often but still hides most of the time. I think I can get them both to be indoor/outdoor cats. Just more work for me.

Picked out a nice spot for the new coop. Who wants to help?

Busy day around the ole homestead. My neighbor called with with a lead on a free rooster. A year old lavender orp. I love orps and was awed when I saw my first lavender a few years ago. They are hard to find and quite expensive when you do. This handsome guy was free from a local chicken keeper.
I let him out of the cage with all of the other birds right there, even the turkeys. No fuss, no muss. He was very well behaved.
Out in the yard a few minutes later he was under the bird feeder calling for the hens about the food he found. About half the flock came running.
Three hens ate then squatted for him. He looks to be a decent mounter. Not rough at all. I think he will be a good addition. His name is Larry.

Now the new coop will have to be altered to keep the orps together and the others separated. I wonder what I'll get with a lavender over buff. Going to have to look for a few lavender hens now. And maybe enlarge the coop. LOL
beautiful boy!!!lucky you, You Know you need to build for chicken math;)
