Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hope you did well and get the job.

I had my first and second interview (same place) day before yesterday. At the second interview, one of the questions asked by the gentleman was what do I do to handle stress? I answered that I go out to my animals and sit with my chickens. He looked up and smiled, and said "I go out to my ducks." Found out he also has horses. I was offered a job, my background check is being done, I go and fill out new hire paperwork today after my 1st job and start working the 2nd job on Friday.

Congratulations!!!

Scifisarah, we still on for the morning pick up? AND how much did you want for shim?
Hah, sorry I didn't have time to read until you had just left from picking him up. Hopefully you weren't too stressed making the long drive worrying I might not be here. I hope he can make you some cute little blue babies. And remember that he is actually a mottled splash, so if you breed the chicks you get from him to each other, or back to him, you will end up with some mottled birds.

So my Hubby and I sat down and looked over our finances and by New Years 2014 we'll be ready to purchase our first property!

I'm so exited! I might sound like a long way off, but it already seems like we've been waiting forever for it, so finally having a date set is such a relief! It's time to start saving every spare penny for my animals when we get our land.

I'm going to plant this coming year with an aim at learning to preserve, so that when we have room for a real garden, we will know what we want to can and what not. We're already planning for tomatoes and pickles, the former I cook with almost every other day, and the later is my husbands favorite snack.

I've been reading about keeping small fruit trees indoors. Does anyone keep a mini lemon tree potted to bring inside for the winter?

I queried about that zebu bull.... she's really asking $250 or make an offer, for him.......... That sends big red flags for me. But the temptation is there to ignore them and buy the bull. However, a "pet" bull, no matter what size, is a dangerous combination. Good thing for me I don't have a barn!

Good luck on the job interview and congratulations on the job getting... sorry I forgot who it was..

I got my mind wrapped around tomorrow's events! Every year I look forward to deer season... only to be disappointed again and again with lack of deer sightings... though I have to admit, sitting up in a tree all day watching the sun rise. Seeing critters I wouldn't normally see, going about their day..... it's great spiritual therapy! More importantly I'm glad I can still hunt with my dad, we've hunted every year for 33 years (40 years, if you consider the times I just tagged along), these times have become more and more precious to me as he gets older.

My sister is in the middle of moving from Lansing to northern lower MI, and wasn't going to go hunting (didn't want to move a freezer full of meat etc) I laid on the guilt trip and told her she doesn't have to shoot anything, but she does have to come down and spend this time with dad as she's not going to get too many more opportunities to hunt with him. I think I helped make up her mind and she will be down tonight to spend the whole weekend hunting. That's one less regret taken care of!... my work is done. :D

Bretheren, glad to hear the interview went well. How is your DH doing?

I ended up with 5 of 7 of my Cream Legbar shipped eggs hatching - 2 little girls and 3 boys - yay! They were some of the most beautiful eggs I have seen, big and clear bright blue and blue-green. Should be laying in the spring!

Sorry to say it to you cold-weather sufferers, but I am sitting at a tiki bar west of Fort Lauderdale enjoying a malt beverage in the 81 degree sun. Back to reality next week.

Best of luck to you!! Hope you find the perfect place!

We only grow what we can in our pressure cooker.
Green beans
Onions
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Peas
Carrots
Beets
Green peppers
(corn is too much of a pain and Dh doesn't like it) *sad face*
Rabbits
Chicken
Turkey
Pork
Deer
wild Goose/duck

I can't help you with the fruit trees inside, mine are outside plants. I'm not sure how good the indoor variety are... seems like they were awful tart in the past. Hopefully they've improved the varieties. I keep talking about adding a solarium on the south side of our home, it's a perfect set up, but again, DH wants to put a deck out there instead.

At least I've talked him into adding fencing to separate the livestock area from the back yard so we can "enjoy" his deck without pooh all over it.... sorta LOL! I've noticed the turkeys in all their "smarts" fly up on the roof of the chicken coop, and off the other side,. a good 12' to get out of the bird yard........ yet, the fence is only 3' high....... lol!

I have a small lemon tree. It's in its first year and blooming like CRAZY! Every branch has about 4-6 flowers on it right now and the little tree is only about 12" high.

Good luck to anyone hunting and shoot some for me! I have little pity for the deer, sorry to say. There are sooooo many that they can spare a few (despite whatever disease is out there). I saw two on the roadside last night on the way home from my sons' conferences, alive and waiting to cross. One was a doe and the other, a young buck. Saw a BIG buck between St. Johns and home last weekend. Missed him luckily. The less for me to hit the better, so bag 'em. That and today's project is to build cages for my ten young fruit trees. They forage in my yard at night, two does. Would like them to disappear as well. Wish my husband would hunt, then I could eat one and make it all better... but I don't see that happening.
