Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

all the birds, nova, or just the little ones? I am still trying to work out what my winter feedings will be; i thought about the starter (if it's pellets) and give corn on the side if they need it for helping to stay warm..... but i don't want to overdo it, so now i'm undecided..........

All the birds are on it. I have calcium on the side for the layers. Only 5 birds are laying right now. I used the flockraiser the same way. It only had 20% i think it was... BlueSeal also has the multi-flock at 22%, but I can not find that at the TSC or FFH, but it is part of the Kent group, so... I guess I just could get Kent from FFH. BlueSeal also has it for BREEDER birds.

I dont' know if you remember my hen Aster who developed wry neck. She was already at laying age and gone broody when the wry neck was starting to happen. I do believe it was because she was choosing to eat the corn I had there free choice instead of the feed. I have since then, not done free choice corn. Some chickens just don't know whats good for them, lol, kinda like kids! Well anyway, they get a scattered chow line first thing in the morning when I let them out, Then I give them another scattered chow line just before roost time with scratch grains. The feed dishes have a 3/4-1/4 pellet/corn ratio. Layer feed typically has 16% protein, I am using a 22% protien, so, I think the protein needs are being met with the split ratio. They all look fat and fluffy, so... All's good so far, and been doing it this way for the last 2 months.

I had just messaged Kent feeds yesterday about the suitability of their feeds for winter feeding and got this reply if anyone is interested. If I do use the multi-flock/finish for winter I would probably provide oyster shell in case they feel the need for calcium. Hopefully they will update their website soon so I can get info on the Home Fresh Multi-flock starter/grower/breeder feeds. I just emailed him back and asked if he can send me that information.

Sarah,
Thank you for your interest in products from Kent Feeds.
In September we upgraded and renamed our Home Fresh line of Poultry Feeds. I mention this because our previous product called Multi-Flock is now called Home Fresh Finish. Finish is nearly identical to the old Multi-Flock. Our old High Flyer line is now called Home Fresh Multi-Flock Starter, Starter/Grower and Breeder.
If you are interested in having eggs laid I would recommend Home Fresh Extra Egg. No oyster shell needed. If not, Home Fresh Finish or Home Fresh Multi-Flock Starter contain 4.5% fat. The added fat will help insulate the birds. You may have to watch to be sure they do not get too fat.
If you have more questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,

Well that's interesting. I am not supplementing any light until January, then I'll start adding an hour a week until we are up to 14 hours of light a day. That might be a nice alternative to the gamebird or the Flockraiser I am using now. Nice for the stupid broads who think chicks are a good thing with winter coming on! LOL

Hah, I thought you were talking about me (stupid broad) for having chicks in my basement in a sandbox. Or were you?

Picture I took this morning. Six does came charging across the road, I'm guessing flushed out by a hunter. They bounced around our corn field for a while before taking refuge in the woods.

And not to sound impatient but I'm desperate and know how easily posts get buried, if anyone in West Michigan knows of a place to get cheap wood chips for the coop, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Nice picture!

I get my wood shavings from the feed mill here in Sparta for $6.00 a bale, but I have been getting some in Rockford for $4.00 a bale, although theirs is a bit smaller than Sparta Feed mill, but not much, but still its cheaper. Hope that helped.
