Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Picture I took this morning. Six does came charging across the road, I'm guessing flushed out by a hunter. They bounced around our corn field for a while before taking refuge in the woods.

And not to sound impatient but I'm desperate and know how easily posts get buried, if anyone in West Michigan knows of a place to get cheap wood chips for the coop, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I just buy them buy the bag for 5 a bag at TSC... One bag covers all 4 coops really.. and leaves some...

Well, its a very beautiful and sunny day for celebrating what had happened 24 years ago. And I thank God for a very good start on life. :D

My view from my bedroom window when I woke up. (I work nights, so didn't wake up 'til after 8 am.)

ladysranti,

You can get free wood chips from Kent county road commission, I belive you can just go with your own buckets and a shovel and help yourself during there open hours, I had called on it before.

Greenmimama, is that the pick-up place in SW? I looked up this place in Kent Co. that offered free wood chips but they are for landscaping and I wasn't so sure what all was in that pile and if it was safe for a coop. Wondering if that's the same place.

I found that Caledonia has a feed mill and it's actually not any farther of a drive than Lowell was. In my defense, the last time I did a search for feed mills in the Grand Rapids area, this one didn't come up. The nearest one google showed was in Hastings or Lake Odessa, both of which are quite a drive. It turns out that the Caledonia feed mill owns the Lake Odessa mill and for some reason only showed the latter in the results. I blame google. So the Caledonia mill has everything I need, even the mill-ground chicken feed my birds seem to prefer. They aren't eating the Layena much, preferring the spent cornfield and the farthest nooks and crannies of our property instead. Hopefully a good feed will keep them a little closer.

TSC actually has wood pellets that are INCREDIBLE for waterfowl. They are compact in size, but the minute they get wet, they swell up and absorb all the water. Very good for wet birds. Or, you can buy the really big bag of the shavings from TSC.

The big bag of shavings at TSC, in my experience, is smaller and more expensive as what I got at the feed mill. The mills sell a 5.5 cu. ft. bale for $4.

http://www.tractorsupply.com/farm-innovators-heated-poultry-fount-3-gal--1011128 I think I got ours up at the Cedar Springs TSC. I just started it up yesterday and it is working great.
I have this one too but it fills from the bottom, have not seen a top fill any place

Here's my buck! And I didn't even have to leave the house for it!
Very nice!!! we have not seen any dear here. DH goes out but not even a doe
our neighbor across the street also hunts from an up stairs window, over looks the corn field. Nice set up
Here is the guy I got from Scifisarah yesterday. He is a sweet little thing... But...

To give you a perspective at how small this bantam is...

The heat lamp is the standard 250 brooder sized lamp.

And next to the pink skinned silkie that is a month younger.
wow, he is small, cute though
Does anyone know of a good source of inexpensive wood chips in the Grand Rapids area, keeping in mind I don't own a pick-em-up truck to transport loose loads of anything? Ever since our feed mill closed, I've been looking. Meijer carries small blocks, pet stores and TSC even smaller. I miss Blue Ribbon :(
CN sawdust in Rockford has bigger bags then TSC, the shavings are the finer type OK for larger birds. They also have the 3 gallon heated waterer, Cheeper then TSC.(same thing)
I liked their feed but had trouble with bugs in it this summer, my be OK now that there has been some cold weather, freezes off grain beetles. They are very good people to work with though and I am sure it came to them like that from the factory. It is a bit of a drive for me so I have been getting my feed closer to home. CN has another location also may be closer to you, can look them up on line
