Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I just have to say that if you bathe chickens in the Fall, Winter or Spring - do not put them back in the coop for a day as they need to be totally dry and they also need to reoil their feathers.
Keep them inside for 24 hours to be sure they are dry and oiled before you move them to a colder place.

Yes! Thank you. I try to limit my girls to baths in the summer but my big girl is a dirt and mud magnet. Plus she is my first so she is a little spoiled ;) I definitely make sure she is dry and done preening before she goes back outside.

I will certainly do that. I did notice that after I gave them a bath, the pullet developed a little wheeze and sneezes every once in a while. I tried to be very careful when rinsing but fear she might have aspirated a bit of water since she kept trying to drink it. Any advice on how to clear that up? I want to make sure they are both 100% before they are put into the coop/cold. Hopefully that doesn't mean packing up their bin and taking it to Wisconsin with us for Thanksgiving...

Thought I would share how I spent my Friday night: bathing chickens - Dragon (short for Snapdragon) and Ivy. Thank goodness I already have a husband who can't be scared off... I am amazed by how much they both love the blow dryer! I think between the Sevin, Ivermectin and two baths, the mites are gone. I will probably dust their fresh bedding with Sevin one more time before adding them to our other chickens in the main coop. I do NOT want any mites in our coop, but I can't leave them in their rubbermaid tote home while we are gone for Thanksgiving.

Wow! They are beautiful!!! (well, maybe not the part when they're soaking wet

OK, I stand corrected... darn laws written so screwy...

From the MI DNR site:
Safety Zones Around Buildings

Safety zones are all areas within 150 yards (450 feet) of an occupied building, house, cabin, or any barn or other building used in a farm operation. No person, including archery and crossbow hunters, may hunt or discharge a firearm, crossbow or bow in a safety zone, or shoot at any wild animal or wild bird within a safety zone, without the written permission of the owner or occupant of such safety zone. The safety zone applies to hunting only. It does not apply to indoor or outdoor shooting ranges, target shooting, law enforcement activities or the discharge of firearms, crossbows or bows for any non-hunting purpose.

I would also like to say...There are reasons for many of the hunting laws....and I am glad to be here today to post the above! Here's my story for the weekend:

Yesterday, my dad shot at a doe, so my sister and I started to walk over to his area to help him. On the way there we were on a 2 track road through the woods(on our property). There was a clearing where there was a row of trees, and then a big open swamp. We heard a gun shot and didn't know where it came from. We had earlier saw a doe run in front of us and into the swamp. When we heard the shot I yelled out "who the **** is shooting?" Right after the first shot there was another one..........this time the doe was 20' away from me. My sister pointed out the neighbor in the tree stand along the property line, directly across from me.......Oh man I got mad then, he was obviously not looking beyond the deer, I was standing right there (with plenty of orange on). I started yelling at him about shooting deer on our property and not looking beyond the target......... he started to argue at first... till he realized, he came so close to shooting me.......... then he apologized so profusely. He missed on the second shot so who knows where the bullet went, thankfully not into me or my sister! His reasoning was that he thought he knew where we were cause he sees our lights in the morning... and I told him, that doesn't mean we stay in our stands or same spots all day! He said he's learned his lesson. I hope so! Later I tracked the blood to where he shot the deer the first time, and that was safe enough, it was almost straight down...... but.when I stood where the deer was, and looked to where he was in relation to me.......... man that second shot was a close call.

Needless to say this has been an eventful season. I've seen way more deer than I have in years. I finally got a shot at a nice doe tonight and my sister connected on 2 doe the two days prior.

Please be safe out there!

First I'd like to invite my fellow hunters to familiarize themselves with hunting regulations and MI gun laws.
Breaking the laws and posting about it on a public forum could be held against you as evidence. Please stop.

Breaking the laws and posting about it on a public forum could be held against you as evidence. Please stop. Partly cause I don't want you in trouble, secondly, I don't feel like your being very sportsman like or safe in your pursuits.......and, sorry, but I think it's down right lazy too.

I am within the limits of the law, in that case. I also am glad you are safe, but don't appreciate being called lazy. Maybe efficient? I don't think you can call anyone that processes their own deer lazy that's for sure. If I really didn't want to work for it, I'd go to the store and buy my meat in plastic. Like I said, I do not under any circumstance take a shot that has a possibility of posing a danger to anyone and thought I made that clear. That is all I have to say on the subject.
