Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We had our neighbor offer us an 8-point buck last night since he did not have time to find someone to process it. We were so excited until he told us it had been hanging in a tree since Thursday

Felt bad telling him we didn't think it would be good anymore with the higher temps we had this weekend, but was a little upset he had wasted all that good meat and the life of the deer. We process our own deer and are super picky about keeping it cold and processing right away. I usually don't even hunt unless I know it is going to be under 40-45.

I wonder if lanolin would be good for protecting the combs? I use 100% pure lanolin for my wool and have a big tub of it.

what a waste.....I wouldn't touch it either.... why would he shoot it if he didn't know what to do with it afterward?

Did I miss anything?

Highlights of what you missed...

Daron's 24. Tap shot a nice buck from her basement window, she was not wearing a dress, but she did have on dress pants and a nice sweater, so we'll let that one slide. This time. RaZ is still a free man and working hard to stay that way and to keep us all in chickens. We've got a lot of new members recently. That's always nice. Stacy got the prettiest cashmere goat. I think it was Stacykins. Babigyrl is preggo with twins. RaZ is a docent... yet kids make him puke. There was is the winter heat/no heat/ what about frozen water discussion that seems to happen every year. (I asked those same question my first winter also). The presidents still president. The sky is still up and the ground is still down. Good books for chicken keeping/homesteading were discussed a bit. Crazy people are incubating or are letting broody birds incubate (guilty!). Oh, and Brethrens hubby had an accident at work that crushed his leg, several surgeries to fix it. Plate and screws, but is on the mend. SO, in other words, same ole same ole. Different day, same poop. Kicking and screaming.

Some people... Iearned to dress and butcher a deer after I hit one with my car. I had to call the PD to come out and shoot it, went and got my pick em up truck, called a friend to help me get her in the back, called another friend whose father hunts, and went out to his place. Drove out to the back 40 of his property, dug a big hole, then strung up the deer. He taught me how to skin it, gut it, and what parts were good and what parts weren't (bruising from the collision). Bagged up the good, buried that carcass, took the good back to the house and proceeded to cut it up into cookable peices. We ended up with about 70 pounds of meat in the end. Wasn't to shabby.

Sarah, Pat is walking around a lot better now. He's now in a 2x3 section of the broody box during the day, he's also starting to complain more. I take him out to the grass during the warmest part of the day and baby sit him for a while. He still can't run though, so at least catching him is easy. LOL. I'll get pictures of him later in the grass. I have not heard him crow or try to crow yet. Maybe he's a girl.

I got 4 eggs out of 6 hens yesterday!! my best day yet.

Maybe we scared the eggs right out of them, we are reroofing the coop :)

Thanks for the replies on using Bag Balm. I'll plan to use it on my girls with combs and wattles. Half of the girls have pea combs so I'm mainly concerned about my buffys (I almost typed BO and I do not plan to use Bag Balm for BO!) and one of my SLW.

HEHE, thats funny. When I first got into chickens, and every one was using the shorts for their names, BO- being buff orps, I was always wondering why the world people would say they've got their BO.... LOL. Anyway, We all know what BO IS and what bo isn't here. LOL.

I am almost certain a lot of folks here would see BO and read it as Buff Orpington, rather than body odor, hah! I know I did!

HEHE. Only chicken people would read it that way. LOL. Every one else would think arm pits and right guard applications.
My husband always talks about UTI's that means something in computer talk but I always hear "urinary tract infection" after working at the humane society & around vets.

So glad to hear he is improving. I noticed that he sat flat here the first couple days before perking up more. He did not crow for me until the fourth day, but it was a really lame one syllable crow like my Ivy pullet in the basement does every morning. Kind of an "ArgwwAwwww!" I guess "Pat" continues to be a fitting name...
