Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Welcome to MI! :) what did you choose for your breed (s) ? Just curious!

Thank you! My husband went a little crazy on chickens. We started with some Americauna chicks. Then got some Isa Brown chicks to add for layers and some Jumbo Cross broilers. The broilers are about due to be processed, and we had one loss last night due to a heart attack, so I know we need to get them done soon.

He then got impatient waiting for eggs... so we had to get some laying hens. That amounted to getting a few Rhode Island Reds. Then he found someone who was moving and needed to find homes for a New Hampshire Red hen/rooster pair and a Barred Rock hen. THEN.. he wanted more variety, so added a few Silver Laced Wyandottes.

Then... he thought it would be fun to hatch some of our own eggs to see what we would get. Sooo.. we have 4 chicks that hatched this last weekend and a bunch more in the incubator. Three of them are black sex links and one looks like it may be a New Hampshire Red or a production Red. He wants to order a barnyard mix of eggs to see what we can get from there too. Talk about chickens up to our ears!! Our Americauna chicks were supposed to be pullets, but they look like we have at least 2-3 roosters too. Don't mind keeping a few more roosters as the one we have will have plenty to share, but afraid we may have too many and have some fighting on our hands!

Hi Ihawes, welcome back home to Michigan, and to BYC and the Michigan thread

Thank you for the welcome back!

I cannot make the reservations until the first Mon in Jan. Looking at the calendar, I'm shooting for the 22nd of June. Late enough to hopefully get good weather. Hope you can make it!

Aw... that is my oldest daughters 14th birthday... think she will want to spend it with a bunch of chicken people??

eh Stacykins, I bought a yarn spinning thing this year and am going to try to learn to spin my own fiber, you gonna sell any of her fiber when she's grown it out?? Or isn't she a fiber goat??

I am going to be learning how to spin too! Just going to learn on a drop spindle, start simple and small. I already have some blue face leicester roving to learn with, as it has a long staple length and is apparently easy for beginners to figure out.

Yep, she is a fiber goat, a mohair producing Angora! I hope to use the fiber she produces, so I don't think I will sell it. With only one fiber animal, I won't have much surplus I think. They're shorn twice a year, whereas most fiber sheep are shorn only once a year.

Tell her there's lots of fantastic food. Lots of different animals, not just chickens. There's been bunnies and geese and ducks and puppies. There may be some young boys her age, too!

That will get her!!! Tell the parents to have her birthday party on Sunday.

Spinning is the ultimate stress reliever. Just don't fall asleep at the wheel. I've caught myself drifting on more than a few occasions. But it's so relaxing!

She is already into the boys!! It scares me!! I refuse to tell her about bunnies and puppies... she will try to make me bring one of each breed home! Might I mention we already have 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and a backyard full of chickens??
