Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

A pair of red headed woodpeckers are nesting in one of my trees. I saw one go in the cavity while the other stood watch above.

Dreamz, I think you would be better off using that store bought coop as a compost bin and starting over with a shed for the chickens. I'm not being mean or snarky. Six birds aren't going to fit well in that small coop.

Use it as a temporary coop when the chicks are big enough to go out (~7-8 weeks). That would give you time to get a real shed built. Menards, Loxes, and Home Depot all have a variety of sheds and you can get them built using their contractors. I think you and your birds will be happier with a secure structure.

It looks like you have a nice place.
Thank you. I wish had more land not to use but to comply with ordinances. I was hoping not just chickens but also a goat or 2. But for that I need to have 5 acres. Went to a place in Freemont but the coops are over 1k and no protection nor run. I think I need to be more thinker and begin working.

On the pallets, yes, sounds like a good idea and in the town of Hart, the ace can give me pallets. Will have to do it that way and spend the money on tools and a bit of materials. 16153191291505989651429665375049.jpg
Just got them out for a bit. They pecking the ground but watching me closely. I guess they don't want me to leave them. Will be back later from the main computer. Cell is too small.

Girls inside, check; food cooking, check; dog inside, check.
That coop was tagged at $1,987.00. Has nothing more. Just like that. Very nice looking and very nice on the inside. But too much money.
20210309_143138.jpg 20210309_142136.jpg IMG_20210309_143837_01.jpg The girls had some fun in the sun. I never left their side. I was watching like a hawk. Even Pixie was watching them. I think she is coming around. She later laid right next to the coop. I did measured the inside and it is so small. I think I will use it as a brooder/time out house. However, I feel not too good about Sophia. That is that little brown naked neck one, they called it turchick at the store. She is always behind and they are way bigger than her and they step over her if I am not careful. I make sure she is under the lamp and I get up every 45 minutes to check up on them. She always sleeps standing up. I just got a book on plans for coops. Also ordered a drill. Hope that gets me going as soon as I receive it. Will go to the stores to get pallets and get 2x2's and 2x4's. I have about 4 panels in the garage that I can use. I just have a regular saw and might need to invest on a better way to cut them. I know I have a hammer in my truck but I don't know if that is advised. I do have 2 rolls of Asphalt roofing. I think the old owner left a roll of insulation too.
Well, with all that rambling, I burned the first batch of pork. On the second one now and hopefully, I do not burn this one, or will have to have chicken again. Pixie will gladly eat that, lol
I am so happy for all of you guys. I really am. Thank you for being so polite and nice. I guess I have to thank God for not letting the sun shine too hard here in Michigan. People in Florida are not polite nor nice at all. I think it is because the sun had burned most of their neuron in their brain and the remaining got distorted by drugs, :he :lau🤔

Yeap! They said maybe by Monday we will get more flakes, argh!
Yeah, but I'd rather get the snow and cold NOW, than have it come when all the trees are budded out. Like several years ago when we had 80s in March, then hard freezes and lost so much of the fruit crop.

I have a hammer in my truck but I don't know if that is advised.
Screwing things together is a much better way to go. Then you can take it apart if you screw it up (ha ha), or even to reuse the wood for something else.

Look at garden sheds at the big box stores, and keep checking craigslist, at least. Adding ventilation to a walk-in shed is easier than building the whole thing from scratch. And get something as large as possible; regrets happen when it turns out too small...
And you do have a nice yard!
Mary
