Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I hope you have provided some grit too.

Um, know their hatch date?
When and where did you get them?
I do not know their hatch date. I got them 4 wks ago at the Farm and Home store.
Yes, I have their grit mixed with their feed. I also feed them oats at times, scrambled eggs, pasta and tomatoes. Have not tried any meats even though I read that they can but not comfortable with that. I guess maybe once they are already laying eggs

Then they are probably 4-5 weeks old, they don't keep them much longer than a week.
Is the grit you are using chick sized granite grit?
I only give my chicks a 20% all flock feed, not big on 'treats' or other foods, especially for that young.

My chicks' favorite treat was their food wetted into a mash, in the palm of my hand. It felt like being tapped with dull pencils. About the time their beaks got sharp enough to matter, I put the mash in a small dish in my palm. I loved that tap-tap-tap noise!

The first time I tried holding a bit of fruit or veg, they ran away, cheeping. Eventually one of them tried it (probably Little; she's my Brave Girl), and then they all did.

Interestingly, when I first brought them Japanese Beetles, they wanted none of it. Then Lark, my bottom of the pecking order girl, tried one. Ha! she said. They don't know what they're missing, and I'm going to get ALL of the treats for once!

She did that day. But not the next.

I had been searching for pictures of different weeks and it is even harder to find for the NN.
I give them this one

I was feeding this starter grower to them but I cannot find it anywhere anymore. Ace does not carry them and there is no Rural King near by

There's several farm stores not too far away, buy a bigger bag this time.
Anything with 20% protein and 1-2% calcium will work for the chicks,
and even after they start laying when you'd add Oyster Shell in a separate feeder.

Great! Do I also do their girt separate as well, right? And once they lay the first egg, then I can change to pullets food?

I did bought Nature Best starter/grower feed bag of 40lbs for 30 bucks at TSC this morning but my X picked the wrong grit. He picked poultry grit and it has to be chick grit which is smaller. Will go later to see if they can change it, if not, I just hold it for when they go outside. It is still too cold outside for them.

If I may, can I please ask other questions?
The back of the house faces East, yeah, finally got it. So the big opening for the coop will be facing East for the benefit of the sun. I am think more of an open concept coop.

At work today and we always get a big rush then it slows back down again. Seems like everyone comes in all at once or just none at all.

It's very interesting when they all want the same dog :barnie

What are the questions? :pop Ask any questions you want. We were all beginners once.

Facing East is great. They'll get some shade in the hot part of the day in summer. They might also wake up earlier, with the early morning light.

When I had chicks, I bought starter/grower for two bags' worth of feeding. Then I switched to All Flock with some egg shells/OS (oyster shell) and grit in separate containers. When I found a 20% protein organic feed, I switched to that, and I like it better than the other one. One of the main "treats" I give my chickens is their food wetted a bit to make a mash. (They think it's candy.)The organic stuff smells SO much better when I wet it! The other stuff kind of stunk.
