Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Farmer boy - very nice pictures of Bella.

A few things to clarify and update on the dog situation. First, before DH shot the dog he blew two holes in our front yard to scare it off and it wasn't scared. It turns out it was the neighbor's son's dog. He said he understood but his dad called mad and saying it was a rare breed and only a year old. I also feel more guilt but much happiness at finding the hen that was in the dogs mouth, she survived. She is a Blue Cochin named Boysenberry. She was a bit traumatized, scratched and has big bald spots. She was on the other end of our property hiding in a field. My DH found her by following a trail of feathers a couple hours before dark. It's been said many times on here but ...... Neighbors....ugh!

I think the person who needs to feel guilty is the owner whose dog had a chicken in it's mouth and was two feet from your coop! That person is responsible.

Are all your chickens accounted for?

I have a few questions for anyone that has done tanning before.
I have a squirrel hide that has been salted and pinned since Thursday. I would like the process to be as natural and chemical free as possible, without using brains...
How long do I leave it salted?

dh asks if you want a hard tan or soft tan. He said leave it salted until its dry, not greasy. He also said don't use squirrel brains.....you'll go nuts. His humor not mine.

Yes they trickled in all afternoon. Only the one was scuffed up. My DH just mentioned that while he was on the phone with the father, the mother was yelling in the background "it was only a chicken". I am proud to say that he told them " no it wasn't JUST a chicken, that was my wife's pet! ". Think he has been indoctrinated?

LOL
Soft tan please. It is super dry, but if there is a certain length of time that I should let it set, I will.
I didn't plan on using squirrel brains... My family tree has enough nuts in it!

Edited to add
Your DH earns points in my book!!!

Grr. I hate people prejudiced against chickens. So it's a $3 bird. What if it was a parrot? A chiwawa? A cat? Your kid? How some people can try to say what you can love is nuts. :( Can't put a price on happiness.

Well what I was afraid might happen did. My DH shot one of the neighbors dogs.

How awful that had to happen to you and your DH. It is a case of total irresponsibility on the owner's part. I would understand feeling bad about having no choice in the matter, but I would be absolutely fuming at the owner. And you know, if the dog is a rare breed, what the heck is running around without supervision for? I consider my dog a rare breed, but she never goes out unleashed or unattended.

I am sorry for what you went through! As some one who was attacked by a dog as a child I have 0 tolerance for a dog not being on a leash. I am very wary of any dog and if one came in my yard I would do anything to protect myself, my girls and my property. Owner needs to take 100% responsibility of his animal at all times. No fault but his own. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh but what if it were a kid? And to us our girls are a part of the family so the intention is the same.
