Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

This is off the chicken topic but I know many of you do some great baking. Last December 27 my dh stopped eating cookies and drinking pop. He has lost 40+ pounds since then doing only that. So this year I need some healthy non cookie snacks to make for Christmas. Is there such a thing? I hope so. I am going to make some English toffe and taffy but to give away as gifts and only keep a sample for ourselves.

Are they fully feathered out? If htey are fully feathered, then I wouldn't use a heat lamp at all. If you need a light in there, go with a 25 watt party light in red, blue or green... I have a purple one, It's just enough light for late comers to the roost.

I have a mama who still goes in the nest box with her chicks, and they are 8 weeks old now. I also have some silkies that go in the nest box still and they are several month old. BUt I haven't ever had them go from the roost to the nest. If they are young yet, maybe they've decided that piling up in the nest box is nicer and more comforting now that they don't have the light?
They have always used the roost until I turned the red heat lamp off 2 days ago. Then last night and tonight they are sleeping in the boxes. I'm not sure if I should just turn the red light back on or maybe set it on a timer at night to go on for a little while so they might use the roost again. I really don't want them to sleep in the boxes. They've been using the roost since I got them back in August. And they are laying eggs pretty often, almost everyday. I'm just not sure what to do...

Congrats on the first egg and the puppies BYFM!

Puppies are safe... Mama is one happy mama!!! Her pups are warm and FED
Man were those dogs hungry... so hungry. Mama drank a full bowl of water too.

I am so glad they are out of there! So so so so glad!!!!

They were on shredded news paper and when he handed me the box of pups, we provided the box, the bottom was full of poo. The pups and mom smelled to high heaven.

He didn't really want to let them go. He wanted to keep one, but we told him she needed to stay with her mom for at least another week (he says they are 5 weeks... I think they are 4) So he let her go.
He gave us 2 canns of food that he was feeding them... it was more than obvious when we got them home that they were strugling to eat it. I told SIL that they need wet, warm puppy chow not that canned crap... we will see if she listens.

As we were leaving he says "Don't you dare bring Lizzy back. I might want that puppy. You got 6 hundred dollars worth in dogs there. I want at least a hundred" ...Lizzy is the mama.

This man makes my blood boil.

I bought Lizzy a bone and that pit smile lit up her face and her tail wagged...She never got any goodies that she didn't have to scarf down because Leo her son/mate would gobble them up.

All of the pups and Lizzy got baths as soon as we got home, they all got fed and pooped and peed all over... happy pups I would say.

She barked at BF when ge got close to the pups, but how could you not be scared of men when you have been beaten and kicked by one.

Maybe they've been using the lite to get on the roost, and with no light, they are having a problem getting up there. Try a 25 watt party lite... Doesn't provide heat, but gives enough lite, or put a regular soft light on a timer. I'd set them on the roost next time you catch them in the nest boxes so they don't make it a habit.

I'll give him $200 if he signs a contract to never own another dog again.

THERON, do you sex your chicks at hatching on the seremas? I am asking, cuz now that I am sending my polish roo Fibber Magee and Molly hen on an adventure, he won't be the one pollinating the flower. Yeah... Buff laced polish on that tiny little serema! Well anyway, when I get ready to hatch her eggs, is the feather sexing the same for them? BTW, Ekta is laying an egg every other day since she started laying. No added light either to the coops, just the heat lamps in the run, and only one of them is white, but it is on the far end of the run away from the coops...
While that will work, we usually just wait about a month and you can tell the difference between cockerels and pullets. I am saying that it will work because sometimes it is hard to tell when the chicks are frizzled.
