Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Is anyone making their 'wishlist' of chickens for next year? I am, but I'm having a difficult time not getting too carried away with things, since I don't think that DH will be thrilled about making me *another* coop. I really really really want some blue laced red wyandottes, some penciled plymouth rocks, true ameraucanas, and something lavendar. Or blue. Or partridge. And maybe some welsummers, dark brahmas, another marans or 2, and maybe a barnevelder. On top of that, I'm going to attempt making my own olive eggers from my current flock, and some sex-linked green egg layers from my EE roo and barred rock girls. So if I get 2 of each kind, and keep 4 OEs and 4 sex-linked green layers, I'm looking at almost 30 more chickens.

This is what you call chicken math, no?

I would love some partridge colored silkie pullets/hens and a few RIR or EE pullet/hens...
But that is about it. Might try to hatch some of my own next spring... not sure cause I don't want any more roos!!!!

glad... I think you need to practice control... I bet you would be like a kid in a candy shop if your DH builds you another coop. LOL

You're right! I would! I tend to go "all in" on my hobbies, and DH, although initially balking at the idea of chickens, likes them now. Technically speaking, we've got coop space for about 33 chickens, and we've got 20 now, although it looks like 4 will go to freezer camp (or craigslist) come spring, so maybe I need to stick to my BLRWs and a few others for egg color. I can always spread into other breeds in a few years when my current batch of 'big girls' eat more than they produce.

Control. And patience.

Those don't sound like any fun at all! I need more pallets.

Cookie laid her first eggs! Green! I thought she had started earlier, but nope. NOW she has for sure! The blue ones are for sure from princess:

Princess before, princess after!
When i bought her her butt was bald, her wings were half bald, her beard was plucked out, and her back was so bare that i wasn't even sure what her feather pattern was........I have her pretty now :) If you don't believe chickens have expression, look into her eyes from before, and the after. Much more happy and sure of herself, her eyes have spark now. Before they were sad and flat looking.

Henry "on duty" all serious and wild eyed, Henry being a ham, all smiley. Likely wants a treat. lol. See the eyes? He holds his feathers different, gives the expressions. My EE's hold their beards different for different moods too, they seem more out there and fuzzy when they are relaxed and when they are tired they even pull their beards over their eyes, like a blankie. lol.
