Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I had a chicken that looked a bit like these but had to get rid of him cause he was a he. Did have those puffy cheek patches though. Could you agree to better health as a reason for the changes you mentioned? Chicken expressions just seem far out to me. I'll take Novas advice and look more.

Ha ha aside. What's the thread that you have where Robin hangs out ?
I think that with a smaller flock you are able to notice more things. Chickens are hard, i had pet parakeets and i figured their "expressions" pretty easy. Chickens expressions are all in the eyes, the body language. If you watch their face feathers, sometimes you can see it..............Kinda like how some dogs seem to smile?
Hard to explain, but it's there.
Hard to see, especially if you have a bunch of them, and especially if they aren't human friendly! My birds are always following me around and wanting in my lap just like any cat, so i can spend more time studying them.

Wow! Nice Fish! Such a great first catch!

I have a question for you guys who eat your chickens - is the meat shiny when fresh?
I bought some chicken today and it felt kind of slippery to me and looked kind of shiny. Does that mean it is fresh?
Thanks!

Sorry to hear about losses. We're going to have to take one of our wyandotte pullets here soon. I feel bad for the poor girl. I think part of her problem is neurological too since I noticed that she walks with stiff legs and very high steps.

I have a dog question:
In an attempt to be proactive (slightly) I'm wondering if anyone has experience with dog crates/kennels with METAL pans instead of the typical plastic ones. Our husky has seperation issues, and we generally put him in a run (6ft heavy duty welded wire on cement patio blocks since he is a champion excavator and destoys chainlink) outside when we have to leave the house (which isn't often, and is usually for just a few hours at most) but since he is an inside dog, I feel bad putting him out since he doesn't have a true winter coat. He's a rescue, about 2.5 years old and chews and destroys things if we leave him in the house unattended. Couch cusions, dishes, bottles of juice, bags of apples, our window trim, cooking spatuals and spoons, shoes, hats, the list goes on and on and on. We tried crate training with a molded plastic crate and he ate a hole through the side of it big enough to get his head out of. In 3 days.

Tried crate training again on a much more gradual schedule and the 2nd time we 'tested' him by leaving the house for about 30min (after over a month of working on things) he ripped the plastic tray to shreds and tried to dig through our wood floor. So now that I feel bad putting him outside, and we have a trip coming up in 4 months, I feel like maybe we should try things again. Are the crates with the metal/steel pans that much better? are the pans actually sturdy or are they flimsy and he'll be able to bend and fold it up, rendering it useless within a few uses?
The metal pan on my kennel is pretty stiff. My Chloe did the same thing with the plastic trays. If there's a chance your dog would dig himself out of the fence, I would try a metal tray in the kennel.

I don't think that's a sign of freshness, I don't know about the shiny, I've never noticed, but really fresh chicken isn't slippery.

can't say that I ever noticed that either, old meat will have a sticky feeling, That is not good

Nice fish! If he's never caught a steelhead before, I'll bet he had a great time reeling that one in!

Looks like someone else started laying yesterday. Found an egg that's smaller than the rest, with a "half-dipped" wash, with speckles. Someone is trying to get this egg thing figured out!

Gotta get the vented gables on the chick's coop sealed off for the winter. When it snowed, a bunch blew in and got half of the floor on the inside wet. There's tons of other venting, so that's not an issue, but we didn't think about snow blowing in!!

Lookie what just got delivered!!

Been working every night on a last minute Christmas gift for my DH's boss. Doing a drawing of the bosses dog for his wife. I'm almost done with it, but it'll be probably the rest of this week. I'll have put about 25hrs into it, and get 75$, that equals to about $3.00 an hour, less if you include the cost of paper, and drawing supplies.......... I am always debating if it's really worth my time. The photo was taken at an angle so it looks funky........ but here it is so far!

Nice pic silly, I remember voting on your Korn drawing. Can you believe it's been half a year since CS! Yeah, Steelhead on flies in the snow on the Platte. Lots of fun but cold. Freezer's full of deer and more to come (I hope) with late doe. In my absence I miss out on so much news. Not much here except:

I still have a few rabbits left if anyone wants a Flemish Giant or one of my FG/NZ mixes. Also, I have an 8 month old purebred Toggenburg wether that needs a new home. He would make a wonderful companion animal for another goat or other livestock. He's disbudded and up to date on CDT shots. Call me if you want to talk turkey. 231-828-5609 or [email protected]

Take care friends...John
