My friend have 5 very nice Isa Browns for sale if you are interested. He has 18, and trying to downsize for the winter. If you don't want them, is there is anyone here that want 5 good layers? They are $8.00 each. He is in Coopersville.

It's a possibility! I still have to finalize things with DH since if we get any new birds, we'll have to build something to quarantine them in (not to mention letting the 3 survivors recover!) -or- keep them in the basement for 2 weeks.......and that just sounds stinky.

Well, Pat is definitly a boy. He started belting out crows. They are very low pitched. It is so funny, he puts his whole heart into it, and he looks so proud. LOL. My serema Fritz the Jerk is much louder. Like I can here him in the house with the windows closed, loud. Pat on the other hand, is in the garage, which is attached to the house, and he is not loud enough to hear unless you are standing on the other side of the door. LOL.

Sorry your girl didn't make it Glad... I'd give ya some girls, as I am over run LOL, but I am even farther than coopersville.

Went out to collect eggs tonight and found THREE! 50% more than I was expecting!! Apparently my little cuckoo marans has started laying (or been laying and I just thought it was someone else). She's only around 18 or 19 weeks I think (will have to go check) so I'm pretty excited. I think maybe she layed my 'dipped' egg last week. We've also finally given her a name...Lucky for avoiding the dog. I wanted Scatter, but DS insisted on Lucky. It's a lot better name than "the ugly one" that we've been refering to her as.

Made a call to someone just over an hour from me that has a bunch of chickens listed. They have several breeds that we'd like to get, so now we just have to figure out when we'll have time to slap something together for them to stay in, and when we can get over there to pick some ladies up. Guess I know what we're going to be spending our Menards rebate we just got in the mail on.

I'm *really* tempted to just go get them Saturday and toss them in with our 3 survivors and forget the quarantine thing. Can someone explain to me again why it's so important? I know it IS important, but I'm having a difficult time articulating that to DH.

News flash!

Annabelle had piglets last night!!! 7 of them!

She had 6 before, and the other 2 sows had 6 too, so this litter is the largest we got so far! So the count of piglets this year is-25, but 4 died very young, 1 got stolen, so 20 now, and 3 more sows expecting soon.

Anyone want some bacon??? lol

I watched 4 pop out, and taking their first breath, it was cool. 3 were already out when I went to check on her when I got home from work last night at 10:20. Each piglets came out about 20 minutes apart. I stayed in that tiny shed until 12:20 am.

4 males, 3 females


They are born about the size of a pop can, so small.


Proud Mama eating yummy bread. She is about 150 lbs.

Let it snow!! The dogs at least are enjoying it. The chickens not so much. My ducks were out bathing in a puddle during it though, do they EVER get cold?

The reason to quarantine your new chickens is to see if they are healthy. They may have lice, mites, scaly leg mites, worms, coccidia, mareks disease or carry respiratory illness.
If you toss them in with your survivors, your remaining 3 birds may become ill and or even die.

If it were me, I would just enjoy my three hens for a couple months while the weather is bad and the food costs are high. Then in the Spring get some new chicks or young pullets! Good luck!
