Glad, I saw your post. Unless there are internal injuries, those wounds should heal fine. Do not try to stitch them, they are contaminated and possibly deep, and suturing will not likely hold up. They need to be allowed to drain as they heal. Clean them and apply an antibiotic (my favorite is Bag Balm but neosporin will work fine), keep them warm and fed, and hope for the best.

Should I sew up rips in the skin? what about puncture wounds? She doesn't seem to be getting *worse* so I have a teeny tiny bit of hope right now.

The BSL is gone. I'm not surprised because of the severity of her puntcure wound.

Now I have to figure out how to put my limping GLW back in with my 100% fine SLW and cuckoo marans. The SLW ruled things before, and I can only imagine she'll be that much worse now that the others aren't at 100%.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss!!! Don't sew up the rips. Just clean them daily and put antibiotic ointment on them for the first two to three days. After that, clean it again and allow the air to get to the wound so it can heal properly.

I know there has been a lot of interest in the Epizootic Hemhorragic Disease (EHD) outbreak in Michigan deer this year. Here is some info for those who wondered about what happened:

Over 10,500 WTD died as a result of EHD this summer in Michigan. The estimated total mortality from EHD in deer from 1955 to 2011 was only 2,150.

EHD is a viral disease affecting white-tailed deer, mule deer, cattle, and some other hooved stock. Cattle seldom show signs of disease, and have low mortality; WTD are severily affected and have high mortality.

EHD does not affect humans, and can not be transmitted by eating or having contact with the meat of affected animals.

The disease does not travel directly from one animal to another. It must be passed by the bite of midges (no-see-ums).

Infected deer often go to bodies of water to cool themselves for relief of the fever, and so are often found near open water when they die.

The disease causes extensive bleeding throught the body, including all the major organs and body cavities.

This summer's exteme heat and drought, ideal for midges, are most likely the reasons behind this year's outbreak. Midges die off as soon as frost strikes, so the outbreak is over for this year.

Hope it doesn't come back soon!

I let the birds out this afternoon after work. Kinda late. All of them were over in Mrs. Browns yard, which is very large, and very open. So, I am standing over there, just outside the treeline, but visable to any damnagit hawk. No hawks today! ANYWAY, so, it is getting close to the time for me to go and get Jace from Bible Club, I whistle for them all to come. Almost all come running. Skatter on the other hand, decides what she has is way more important than bringing her puffy faced, fluffy footed rear end back to the home yard. Fritz the Jerk realises she isn't coming, so he goes running at her, she sees him coming and starts running towards me. Rod Stewart turns around, sees Fritz the Jerk in hot pursuit of Skatter, Skatter sees Rod, coming at her, she hits the grass, Rod hits Fritz, turns and does his rooster deed and while he is doing that, Fritz serema chops Rod upside the head. Funniest thing I have ever seen in my life! Good thing I had already went pee.
The was so funny, them roosters are a crack up

Up at 4 as usual. Looked outside expecting to see a bunch of white stuff. To my great surprise, there were just a few random flakes floating around and I could still see the grass. Now, 3 hours later, the whole landscape has changed. Be careful out there today if you are going on the roads. I'm headed to work now and will be taking it very slowly. Hoping that getting back home later this afternoon isn't a problem either. At least I don't have to worry about the run anymore. The net covering was replaced yesterday by welded wire. It's the little things that make me smile.
