Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Alright. After some more searching and inspection here are how things stand:

the SLW was in the coop laying an egg and is unscathed.
the GLW found a place to hide, and is limping on her right leg, but otherwise looks fine.
the cuckoo marans pullet also found a place to hide and is fine

One BSL is badly injured, and the one BR is badly injured. They are on the covered porch in the big wire dog crate. They won't stand or walk. Their backs are quire bare, there are some rips in the skin/fat on their backs, and the BSL has a puncture at the top of her wing/base of her neck on the left side. The BR's tail is pretty chewed up. I don't see where I could sew or glue anything back together.

I have pictures of the injuries, but don't know how to put them in the 'spoiler' section so those that don't want to see it don't have to.

Both of my BOs are dead, as well as 2 of the BSLs, my BCM that would have started laying any day, and our favorite BR that would let us pet her, carry her around, and was the friendliest of all of the chickens.

Gladahmae- So sorry about your hens. That is terrible! Glad that some had survived! Hope they get better, and you may have to post pictures anyway, so we can help you better. I read a quote somewhere- (If people don't want to see gross wounds they should not have animals. It's a part of animal husbandry sometimes. You can put a disclaimer.)

I'm so sorry! On your injured girl - just my opinion - unless they are in a great deal of pain or obviously beyond help, give them a bit of time before you make a decision. A day may make a difference -although you never know with internal injuries. Our girl who survived a hawk attack had chunks of flesh missing along with feathers. She healed up very well. If they are really bare you could always put an apron on them for warmth and protection. I hope they pull through.

Glad I am so sorry!
I would give them a chance... if you think they are too far gone then please put them down.
I learned that the hard way with Nugget.

However, you may be surprised at how well they heal up!

Post the pictures in the message body, highlight them and then go back to the spoiler tool bar. Click the "spoiler" balloon. Click on "preview" to see how it will post.

I just tried it.

Chickens can be remarkably resilient and recover from wounds that look really back. You need to make a judgement call if the animal is seriously injured and the humane thing is to put them down.

At the risk of offending folks, I don't see why an injured bird couldn't just be processed for the dinner table. That is if you are OK with eating your pets.

Sometimes, I find my chickens do some pretty smart things. Other times...they are not the brightest.

I'm about to go rescue a pair of hens who flew up and into the dog run. I've been watching them for a while, they can't seem to figure out how to get back out. They've been pacing the fence as if it is a magical forcefield, forgetting they have wings and used them to get IN. Thankfully, the dogs are inside, since the beagle mix has chickens on her hit list.

Sorry about the dog vs chicken incident. Don't be too hard on yourself. Stuff like that happens. Hope the birds recover. Mine did when Brogan bobbed her tail and she found refuge in the well pit.
