Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Just got back from shopping at Meijers. Amazing how much faster you can move thru the store when you're the only customer. . I still have to go back out later this morning to get some ground beef but other than that the xmas shopping and the grocery shopping is all done.

I've always celebrated xmas eve rather than the day. When I was on the fire department many years I was scheduled to work Christmas day and the years that I wasn't I would trade with someone who was. That way the boys could go to their mother's on Christmas day and it prevented any problems.

This year there will be 17 people to help us celebrate. Going to get all the baking down today and tomorrow bake the ham and the sweet and sour meat balls. That should help to minimized how much needs to be done on Monday. We long ago quit exchanging gifts and only the grandkids receive presents. Our time together sharing a special meal is our gift to each other.

Well the house down here is a little bare, no point in decorating for Christmas when we are going to be here for a week. But I did string some lights in the tree out front, and our gifts for the family are wrapped. I have to say thought that 43 degrees was a little cool for down here this morning!

Planted 2 orange trees and a lemon tree yesterday, they are almost as tall as I am. Amazing what you can fit in a car trunk when motivated by a sale.

House is toasty. Can run the furnace and some lights, so the kids aren't so whimsy today. Gotta figure the water thing out. Will probably have to shut everything else off to turn the well pump on. Can't complain about having a brown Christmas this year!!!

New power restoration estimate is Monday from what I can tell now. Hopefully sooner but I know the linemen are working long hours in poor weather, and will have us back up and running as soon as they can. This past spring when we got that storm we didnt have power for 5.5 days, so I think 2 or 3 shouldn't be an issue.

Happy weekend all!

It's good you have heat. I hope you get power back before Monday. Our power stayed on, although for Thursday night it was like having disco lights, I unplugged everything electronic. About 5 miles over there is a large area without power, so friends of ours - a family of 8 came over to take showers yesterday. DH put in 20 hours yesterday and was back out at 5 this morning. Hopefully things settle down now. Now for the project of the morning - shovel out the chicken coop- not looking forward to it.

Blessings to all of you up North with the power issues!

We did not get much snow in Grand Rapids, just enough to make things look Christmasy!

I am making a spaghetti dinner tomorrow - Xmas Eve! I am using the roasted tomato sauce that I froze this Summer!

I noticed that the Xmas rush on the roads and in the stores seems to have slowed down? Perhaps everyone is home wrapping!

1Muttsfan, Have a wonderful time down South!
Nova, I liked your idea of a gift of eggs for the teachers!

I remember past Egg presents teachers received, never seemed happy about them though. Hard to get off the windows, siding, and left spots on auto finishes. I never got those myself, thankfully. Apples, never eggs, in any form.

Sam, the family celebrates Christmas Eve here. That leaves the parents to wake up with their kids on Christmas morning and have time to enjoy the magic of Christmas before they have to go to in-laws. Makes for less stress on everyone.
So cold out! But, we have electricity, so I'm thankful for that.

I have 4 hens right now but am considering getting 2 more in the spring. I have 1 RIR and 3 Americanaus. Does anyone have any suggestions on a breed and has anybody ever ordered from mypetchickens.com? My chickens are not very loud and I live in a neighborhood so quite breeds are what I'm looking for but I would like to get a different breed than what I currently have. What is your experience with mypetchickens.com? Or does anybody sell chicks on here? Thanks!
