Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Well, with pain in my heart, Smurfette is waiting for me in heaven. Took me a few days. Did the cover of the run but left Pitbull 's run opened and now everyone is on the big coop. Very happy that Pitbull and Itty-bitty are friends. 11inches of white stuff fell of the skies. Opened the run but they acted as suspected, chickens, lol

Canceled heart test in the 31st, told the I was not going to drive 3hrs for a 30 min test under a snow storm. Next date is the 29th but if I feel weird about the weather, it will have to be done next year.

I'm so sorry about Smurfette 😔 so good to get stuff done around the house and great that they're all roosting together!

Mmm. Those pastels look good. Imma have to look up how to make those!

They are a lot of work. A lot. You will have to search for Puertorican pasteles recipes and there are many. I do not use a lot of green bananas because I like them soft. I use [yautia lila] have no clue of a name in English for that. But anyone in a Dominican or Puertorican store would know
Mexicans would not know. It is a root vegetable.

My son in law is from Dominican Republic. My daughter finds this in US stores where it is called Malanga. I don't know if that is the English name or why it is called that there. She said it is delicious, like potatoes with butter taste - without adding anything to the Malanga. It is like taro root with pretty pink threads of color through it. She doesn't know if it is actually a type of taro, though.

Thanks, Dreamz, she smiled when I asked if she knew it.

Yes, they call it malanga. Get about 4lbs of it with about 4 green bananas. Use gloves to peel the bananas raw. They have this gluish liquid that will stain your hands and clothes. Once you have peeled the yautia or malanga cut in pieces. Put both in Food processor with little of chicken broth to smooth it out. Once done, mix well with some salt. You can taste it raw, nothing will happen to you so you see how is in salt. Add a little annato oil. I get the seeds and boil some avocado oil or corn oil and add the seeds. Once the oil is pretty red I turn off and strain seeds out. That's half the battle. Lol
Now you have pork cut in pieces and you are going to cook it with adobo, sofrito, parsley, cilantro and recao or culantro. Once cooked, make sure barely juice is on the meat. I let it simmer all. Then you need plantain leaves, paper for pasteles and of course the yarn to tie them.
With all ready on a table, put paper with a piece of the leave on top. Put some red oil, a cooking spoon of masa [mix of malanga] in the middle. Then in the middle a serving spoon of the pork. Know the big trick is folding them without any going out the sides. Once folded, make another one and place it facing the first one and they get tied together. Each [junta ] or double one gets boiled for an hour. I use chicken stock on my water for extra seasoning.
