What do you think are the pros and cons of putting a chest freezer in the basement vs in the garage?

The freezer is designed for garage placement because that was the only option when we bought it. So it can go either place.

There is space for it in either place and clearance through the doors and such. It isn't too heavy for the movers even going down the stairs. It is about as convenient to the kitchen in either place.

What else might be pro or con for one place or the other?

My garage is usually the same temperature as the outdoors in winter. Maybe a few degrees warmer, but it can definitely be below freezing. Will your garage get that cold, and does that hurt the freezer? (I have no idea.)

I would prefer to go to the basement than the garage. Our basement floor isn't all that clean, but it's a lot cleaner than the garage.

This time, the garage is attached to the house. It has 6" studs and finished walls; I think there is insulation but I'm not sure. The overhead garage doors have extra insulation. The garage shares two sides with the house and there is bedroom above the garage. I think it will freeze sometimes but not anything like the uninsulated, detached garage at our last house did. I didn't like the freezer out there in the temperature extremes but it kept the food frozen all the time.

I can't remember if the "garage ready" feature was for the cold in winter or the heat in summer. It is for whichever causes problems with freezers that don't have the "garage ready" feature. Maybe both heat and cold.

Interesting! I've never heard of the "garage ready" feature.

Well, that was an interesting quick google. @saysfaa, it's for both heat and cold extremes. From your description, your garage would be fine, temperature-wise, for a garage ready freezer. So it comes down to which is more convenient access for you. Or, which door you don't want to open in the winter/summer, letting the cold/hot air into the house.

Would you want to have to go downstairs to get to the freezer? Personally, that would be my biggest problem.
