[Chickin Fairy]

Bumblefoot struck yesterday. My girl, Shuri has had constant bumblefoot for a few years and I only treat it when it gets bad. She enjoyed her spa day and has a fancy foot wrap to show off.

Has anyone else had an influx in these guys this year? I went out to the run this morning and they were around in swarms. The birds enjoyed chasing and eating them. After learning more about them, they are Green June Bugs. They are not an invasive species and can cause minimal damage to crops (fruit trees) and lawns. But seeing these big guys flying around like clutzes was definitely an unforgettable sight!

When I was a little girl growing up in the south, we used to catch those and tie a string to one of their legs and let them fly around. Thus the expression "like a June bug on a string".

My mystery chick at approximately 15 weeks old gave me my first egg today. I wasn't expecting it this soon but I knew she was getting ready.

We had them all over the place a couple years ago. The following Spring I found a lot of their grubs in my raised bed gardens, and brought them to the coop/run. Flock approved.

One of my blue Plymouth rocks laid her first egg yesterday. I cracked it open today and it's a double yolk! I've never seen such a tiny double yolk egg

Venting a bit here, not chicken related. We have several redbud trees, love them, and every year many many seeds. Once in a while I find a two or three year (best guess) seedling, and love every one. Never understood why so few seedlings compared to the number of seeds. So, last week i found a tiny (three leaves, 4" tall) seedling, and was really excited. Put a tiny stake next to it, and planned to pot it up. Yesterday, went back to get it, and somebody had eaten the whole thing! Bunny rabbit, squirrel, one of our dogs, somebody. No wonder there are so few little redbuds out here! Hope it tasted good, I guess. Blast it!

Rabbit, deer, I have never found a "wild" seedling near mine. Always assumed one of those two eat them. You ever try to propagate them?

I found them tough to propagate via seed. But I don't think I properly scarified them before stratification and only tried once.

You should also be able to propagate via cuttings in late spring/early summer.
