hillbilly hen do you have a light on at all, and what breeds do you have and how old.. I have 6 hens, and i get 2 eggs everyday.. and 3eggs for two days then it skips a day.. funny my 2 yrs olds lay better then my 1+ yr olds.. my lights on a timer its 15w, goes on at 3am turns off at 7am.. i started giving mine some boss and extra protien, i think that is helping them,

I am always trying something new i even gave them cayenne pepper.. lol they still lay the same.. but bigger eggs which could be the extra protien. Ive read that on here..

yes show your girls the empty kfc bucket.. lol

HH,
OK is better than lousy or some descriptive terms for how you're doing. I'm glad you are OK . Hang in there. My big High Bush Cranberry does not have many berries this year. Hope the weather this year is more normal than last year.

My query about seriousness of Roo abuse of hens was answered yesterday by the birds themselves. I limped out, being very care full of ice, to the coop and found Patience with a nasty quarter sized area on the back of her scalp gone. Was going to apply Blue Coat, however did some reading and decided to use Vetericyn instead. Bry is at Tri-County now, picking some up.

One of those ungrateful roos nabbed Patience, who sat on their eggs and hatched them and was a very good mother hen. I am astounded by the ferocious nature of roosters in mating. She nurtured them for cripes sake. Well, at least they will not be causing any more damage now. I chopped off three heads yesterday and managed to butcher one of the buggers last night. Left two wingless, headless bodies on the deck cause I couldn't stand the pain any more. ( Will it be OK to finish the job today or should I just bury them?) They Sorta froze. Guts in.

This AM at about 6:00 one of the remaining fellas started crowing. I had closed the last two out of the pen so they could not damage any more hens. I tried to catch him, the other one started in. I couldn't get close and couldn't swing the large fishing net anyway so i came in and woke Bry to help. He did(unhappily) we got the other one that had roosted above the run gate below the roof. Stuck him in a cage and tried some more to corral the one sill free bird. He did not seem to realize he can't see in the dark. We gave up. Bry went back to bed. I sat and stewed.

Bry captured him a little after noon. He is dispatched. One to go now. Not today though. I hurt too much.

bobbry - hi i am new here, but i do know that its ok to finish processing those birds especially with the freezing temp. if your not up to butchering today, you can also put them in a garbage bag and put in your own freezer till you can get to them.. feathers & all.. they will keep fresh..just skin them and gut when you ready to tackle them.
so sorry to hear about your roo problem. and more sorry to hear about patience.

My motion scheduled for tomorrow has been re-scheduled at the request of the city attorney. This makes 3 or 4 times that he (they) have adjourned this case.

Make you wonder what they are up to, eh?

Ok my fellow Michigan chicken lovers.. I have a slight dilemma that my husband and I have been arguing about. He wants to increase our chicken flock, but we don't really have the coop space for too many more right now. So, we are going to build something to add to our space. We have our idea and plans in our heads and such, but we need to know if a permit is going to be required. Does anyone know what we need a permit for? If it is not attached to a current structure, and is less than a certain square footage, do we need a permit? It won't be a permanent structure either. We are actually taking an idea for a small goat hutch and expanding it to be a bit bigger for the chickens he wants to add... any ideas??

You have to check with your own township on their building requirements. They can all be different in one way or another.

Yeah it sure does.... hang in there... hope they don't try to make an example of you or something. or make up some bogus crap.......

That's too bad. I had one baby that got mean to the baby hens right away, so he had to be dispached too. Hormones, some birds get wild. :( Competition probably made it worse, but all in all couldn't be helped. I have had some luck keeping bachelor pens, but once in sight of the girls all bets are off...................

Oh, almost forgot. Please please PLEASE don't take this post and make it political, i don't engage in politics and it is strictly forbidden to talk about them on this site, i wanted to post this to help my fellow michiganders, since so many of us are feeling the pinch this year....

I don't know how many of you are current on the news, i am not at all but today i learned that there is a possibility that social security (disability too? is that linked?) may very well be delayed, as well as vet's benefits. (Presidential speech today) Very sad news, if you know anyone who receives those let them know to hang on to every dollar this month.

Also, tax returns may be late as well, especially the ones that file with these tax credits http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Lis...in-filing-in-late-February-or-into-March-2013 (most notable are the energy credit and mortgage interest credit)

so bottom line don't count on a refund to use towards a bill, and if you are trying to hurry and get your money as fast as possible don't use those particular credits!!!
Just wanted to spread the word just in case, don't want any of you suffering because of it, since so many of us depend on our returns to help with the winter bills. :(
