Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It's time for me to start canning tomatoes too. I've got a windowsill FULL of 1 pounders. This one is 1 1/2 lbs. Good year for tomatoes! Gonna have to give some away too. My sister gave me a dozen seeds of Indigo Rose tomatoes and all twelve have turned into fully loaded bushes and you can't can or sauce them - fresh eating only. There's no way we can eat em all.

Hi,

My name is Chris and I'm just stopping by to say hello! I'm new to BYC and raising chickens. Wanted to get to know some others in MI that raise chickens. I have just 2 now, a White Leghorn and a Buff Orpington, as well as a Pekin drake... Just recently realized that we won't be getting any duck eggs :) Oh well, luckily he's cute and will earn his keep with his entertaining antics!

Hoping to add to the flock next spring. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome Caz. We only have to hens right now, too with similar adding plans for spring.

Mom2, I'm so sorry. Missed opportunities can sometimes be heartbreaking. Please know that, even if you had rekindled your friendship, her life course probably wouldn't have changed very dramatically.

Fear of what, Nova? Fear that people won't accept you for who you are? Fear that you are not what they expect you to be? Fear that your fine make-up and dresses have been replaced with muddy shoes and an un-tucked shirt?

If that is how people judge and value you then I think that you are better off without them. That's just my opinion.

You put on those over-alls and just be you YOU. I'll like you anyway that you present yourself just as long as it is the REAL you and not some phony, pretentious, fake person with conditions of friendship that I can't meet. Heck, I won't even hold it against you that you have kids.

I don't have over-alls... YET. LOL

The friends were not slobs persay... We all had defined plans. I started down the road on them... Then made a sharp left turn. LOL. I don't paint anymore, I never continued in theatre, I write on occassion... AND I had kids a lot later than every one else. Most have teens... I have a first grader and a toddler. LOL. WAY different than the life plan. I would not change it at all.

Be sure to NOT let your duck mount your hens when he's reached maturity. You will have dead hens...

Welcome to BYC and the MI thread.

Wow, ladyrsanti, that tomato is huge! So far, I have lots of small tomatoes and they are all still green.

Busy week so far this week. It's Danish Festival time here and I have been carting kids everywhere. Today was the children's parade and I swear all those kids throwing candy were aiming for me. My daughter was laughing her bum off every time I got hit by a smartie. Tomorrow, I'm walking the main parade with said daughter's middle school band. Maybe, I'll get some revenge with the squirt bottles I'll be carrying...

I have some friends that I keep meaning to look up. Fear is what stops me. Why? I have really turned into a hillbilly... Would they accept that?
You know, it's one thing to dress up for work, but at home you should always be you. Put to them the right way, most upitty ups actually enjoy hanging with a hillbilly, MUCH more fun ! ;)
As to the chicken thing, once people find out the chickens are clean and well kept, they usually get a kick out of them. I tell folks they are my $3 parrots, since i always wanted a cockatoo but could never afford one.

For a glamorous take on chickens, hobby farms does a good job, and another one called "Mary Jane's Farm" and no, it's not that kind.
Besides, Nova, anyone who hears your chicken soaps couldn't help but laugh and fall in love with them! How is your story coming?

Welcome to BYC and the MI thread.
Thank you for the warning... never thought of that since I've always assumed they were all girls. They all free range together during the day most of them time... will he automatically try or does this only happen sometimes?
