Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

What a morning! I got 8 eggs from my chilly chickens. None were frozen.

They hadn't been going outside for any extended period of time but they do go out several times a day. Usually when the dogs go out. They have to check out what each other is doing.

One of the fun things left over from Saturday night's rain is ice on the north side of everything. Our front door isn't shutting properly without a fight. The latch on the small coop has been iced up every time I go out...to the point I have to take a hammer to it. But it must not have closed properly last night because this morning I went out to find the little coop door open all the way! The poor babies, who knows how long it was open. Everyone was ok and it was still 14 degrees in there. I also found my two girls iced up again. Sillychicken I have tried the hair ties and trimming. It works on most however these are crested and bearded and unless I pull the feathers out of their foreheads and cheeks they still have a problem. I think I am just going to have to buy another heated waterer.

I've been looking at hatching eggs, my son and I decided that if I smuggled emu eggs in the incubator DH would catch me and we would be in trouble so I guess no emu eggs. I am still waiting for my test results before I really start planning for the year.

Question...I called my local post office today and let them know I am expecting chicks to come in between the 27th(Sunday) and the 30th. I gave her my contact numbers. She said they are only open till noon each day. I tried to call flint to see if there was a main hub I could go pick them up at before they send them to my local post office....no luck yet.....have any of you tried to pick them up from hub instead of the local post office? If so, how did you set that up? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Update....a very nice lady called me back from the hub in flint and said she will let the dock know I am expecting the chicks and to call me as soon as they come in. She was also nice enough to give me the shipping docks phone number in case I wanted to call and check to see if they are there. Flint is about an hour from me...but I think it will save my little chicks some stress if I can pick them up from the hub. My male maternal instinct is kicking in already..lol

Interesting article. I was wondering if anyone has any experience using Oregano extract?

Good morning! It is currently a brisk 11` here in Southern Michigan! We are expecting snow to start around noon and run through the evening with approx 3" accumulation. Fortunately, the snow should bring in some warmer temps.

I hadn't seen anyone post so wanted to pass along the that MSU ANR Week info has been posted. They are holding the Pullorum Certification class again as well as a Small Flock Poultry Workshop on Tuesday, March 5. Link to the schedule is: http://anrweek.canr.msu.edu/anrweek/home
Thank you I have been watching for that..

Sooooo I had to go get hay for the horses, that was interesting. As anyone else on here knows hay is very expensive this year. The only I can find in my area is around bales that are running $100. That will last me a whole 2 weeks... Well on my adventure this is what happened...

Never had an issue before but it must have just had enough ice on the bed of the truck to let is slide right out... Soooo it can only get better right?.

My post office brought them out to my house from Saginaw! I couldn't believe it! Instead of sending them the local office they brought them to me.

What a nightmare! Hope you were able to get some of it home. I expect the loose stuff would blow away though without a tarp to hold it down.
