Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey all, does anyone here sell their meat birds and or turkeys??? I am looking into it but wondered what the going rate is?
chicks? full-grown and ready to butcher, or already processed?

someone up by us is selling chicks for $1 each per 100, and 1.50 for any quantity under 100. last summer there were a few people GIVING away cornish crosses that were fully grown. no idea on the processed.......would there be (health) regulations on that?

I am planning to have them processed and packaged locally. That way I don't have to worry about that. If you were closer I would make the trip. If someone wanted I could sell them a live bird though

How long does everyone keep thier eggs b4 they throw them out.. or do you do the water float test when they are older.. just wondering
Hatching eggs or eating eggs?
Eating eggs have a pretty long shelf life. If I want eggs to hard boil, I leave them for a few weeks so they can be peeled.

Store bought eggs are given a 45 day shelf life from the time they are packaged.
An article in Mother Earth News claims that eggs in an air tight container in the fridge are good for nearly 7 months. I'll have to look that article up.

I have no problem eating my eggs that are a few weeks old. The trouble is that I rarely have any eggs get older that about 10 days.

I can't speak about hatching eggs as I have never done that. But when you think that a hen lays an egg a day and then goes broody, her eggs all hatch at about the same time. How many is that?

I guess viability of fertile eggs is pretty good over several days before the hatch occurs 21 days later.

My mom has done this for almost 10years years, I think she is going to take a break this year. I'm pm you her # and she may have some ideas for you....... or she just may talk your ear off and tell you how frustrating last year was........

It's best not to refrigerate hatching eggs, as it can cause a failed hatch. Leaving any eggs at room temperature is fine, just don't bounce back and forth between refrigeration and room temp.
If I have followed previous discussions here about hatching eggs properly, the eggs don't develop until the hen sits on them or they are put into an incubator. They need specific temps to spur the process, that way a hen can lay eggs over a period of time, then brood and have the chicks hatch all at once, rather than have babies hatching for a week.
