Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh, yeah, Fuzzy, I don't know if you come down this way, (you've visited with Nova, or something, right?) but if you do, let me know and I could get you a dropper bottle, I have some glass ones I have saved from supplements, (like echinacea, primrose oil, that sort of thing,) for the fictional day that I will have a chance to have some fun with inks. I could part with one.

And anyway, what happened to our Nova, Fuzzy, Juise playdate?? I am pretty sure I remember someone saying something about "vegan deserts"?

Ok... ya'll can skip the vid, but I couldn't help but pick on Mama Skatter. Figured I may as well get a vid of her and the chicks while I was checking to see if the faverolle baby had made it out yet. It is pipped and zipping, but not out yet...
THAT WAS SOOOOO SWEET, had to watch it twice

as to the Mareks vaccine, it is not 100% effective that is true. they say only about 90%....most places use a sterile vaccine, it does not give the disease and is not contagious

make sure you ask for sterile vaccine. also raising turkeys can pass on immunity to chickens but also give disease to turkeys from the chickens.
D if you do D if you don't

perhaps if you don't vaccinate and never get birds from any one else, "closed flock" you will be fine. I don't like to gamble so I will vaccinate,,,, this does not take away your organic classification if you are trying for that, I am sure I read Vaccinations are OK

If you take your birds to show you are also exposing them to everything that is out there

Welcome Moma

....A lot of people on here have beautiful birds and are willing to sell, If you want quality birds to show that may be the best rt. There is a chicken stock...picnic in Lansing June 22 ,there will be lots of baby's there to buy and some will have older birds to if you like

Guineas raised with chicks from day 1 tend to consider them their flock and will go to the coop with the rest of the chicks
At least that worked here last summer guineas are a lot of fun!!

Could it be your buck? Or could the girls be too heavy? Ours are pretty fat right now...may have to get them out to hop a few laps!

I'll be starting to breed mine soon.. We gave them (us) a break over winter.

I'll be planning a litter or two to bring kits to Chicken stock... NZ?/CA mixes.
Nope, not the buck as it is multiple bucks to multiple does. And our does are all at weight for the breeds. We raise English Spots, Belgian Hares and English lops and showing nationally. :) I think it's a matter of bad luck on catching the does at the right time and this crazy weather. Since we did have a few nice days in a row I was able to get all of them to take and hopefully they're bred!

We have a couple national shows in April and this is our last chance to have some Juniors to take along.

Yes as to the question could my birds be carriers, Yes I think I stated that most likely that was the case. the vaccinated birds were not supposed to be carriers but the chicks that were hatched from my vaccinated birds and are now 3, could very well be the carriers

of all the birds I had die only 1 showed the classic Marek's symptoms, That was what pointed me to Mareks. The first group I had die in 2011 the Vet. thought had parasites and cocci. It was when the next group started getting sick in 2012 I became very concerned. they didn't have parasites or cocci according the vet so what is it??? symptoms were the same as the yr before. then the one chick had the classic leg paralysis .......when more continued to die after 9 mo. I had to find out for sure, thus the necropsy. Very costly but well worth the peace of mind knowing .....Even DH felt A LOT OF $$ but well worth it.

I hope non of you have to go through this. I think the best way is to keep a closed flock, that way you greatly lower your chances of exposure....
Bio security,

may be get a turkey??

Yes, haven't forgotten, supposed to be a strawberry cake! Buuuut bad weather and life got in the way, hopefully soon?

OK, didn't know about the sterile one; i do think vaccines are a good idea, but something that perhaps needs to be an "all or nothing" kinda thing?
For the turkeys, chickens give turkeys blackhead but there has been some intreguing results for actually curing the turkeys using metronizadole; but of course you could never eat the turkey. So all in all i think if you perhaps got the vaccine that was the live turkey version and only adopted adult birds and raised your own chicks all would be well? I'm intregued about the idea of breeding for resistance.
I also found out that the vaccines are also being made with other strains too so i guess moral of this story is to know exactly what you are buying? I just wish that they could find a true vaccine that prevented the disease altogether. :/
