I just got Kelly on board with the plan to build a new hoop house coop!!!! Thinking about 8x20, thought is that if we need more room later I can butt the new up to the old and open a door between the two. What are everyones thoughts?

I believe that I mentioned this a few weeks ago but here is a reminder. A representative of the USDA reminded the ag commissioners of the farm census being taken through the end of February.

The USDA considers any farm operation to be a "real" farm if they produce or have the potential to produce $1000 worth of agricultural goods in a year.

If you sell your eggs, wool, honey, fruit, vegetables or any other ag product, you might consider signing up with the USDA as a farm for the census.

If nothing else, it should show that there are more of us small farmers than they might think.

Not sure about my new roo, yesturday he pecked hard at my hand, no big deal he is new, but today he flogged my arm, i grabbed his neck and took him down.. and held him there a minute, not sure he will make the cut.. i will keep him for now to help keep the hen warm till i can get her established with my other hens, if he keeps acting like he is the boss.. well there is only one chicken boss in this yard.. and he will lose the battle.. so makes me think he wouldnt be good breeding stock if he is mean, dont want to pass on that trait..

The Site Selection committee has met via telephone and they decided not to include Wingless and myself on the committee. However, they did ask us to address the first face-to-face meeting on April 12 in East Lansing. We are working on what we want to say to them.

Meanwhile the Michigan Small Farm Council (MSFC) has been organized and we could use some help if people are interesting in preserving their own farm operations.

What kind of requirements are there to join the MSFC? I'm getting ready to start my seedlings for our organic garden. It's 80 sq ft in the backyard, so I don't know if that's enough to qualify, as anything other than a hobby garden.

I really can't wait til we get our own property and I can join the ranks of those fighting the good fight.

Just scored on a huge insulated dog house... this will either be a goat house or a new chicken house..... decisions decisions!
It's being delivered tonight! It's 6x4x3.4tall.. With a little stain, securable door, venting and maybe vinyl flooring it'll be perfect!

Very nice steal!

I think it was gladahmae who said something about Polish being picked on. My two roosters are bald because they get picked on. I have only had one girl get picked on. She was actually not just feather picked but bullied and ended up dieing. She broke her neck trying to hide from someone. Had I been able to tell who did the bullying they would have been gone. Blood stop, BlueKote and sometimes superglue and feathers help. I have an old thread somewhere rooster toupee when I super glued my boy.

Today's pictures.
My problem Polish. I gave up on blowdrying and just brought her in with sneezy boy. I have determined his sneezing is because his odd comb covers his nostril and when he drinks he gets his comb wet which then drips down into his nostril. I'm just waiting for it to warm up so they can go out, maybe Sunday.

Nice weather brings lots of traffic. We have groups of 20+ go by on the trail that goes through on our back field.
