Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I've often stated that if you are going to raise chickens you need to become accustomed to having some of them die. The same must be said with regard to protecting your flock from disease introduced by wild birds. It some times happens and there is actually very little you can do about it. Probably about the only thing you can do is food management. Never feed more scratch grain then your flock will eat in just a few minutes and broadcast it in a small area. Excess grain attracts wild birds but they are not likely to land in close proximity to actively feeding chickens. If your feeders are outdoors use covered.

TY All!!! Opa, I think you have exactly diagnosed why I have this Problem Sparrow. I personally have hated sparrows ever since I saw one attack and kill a Daddy Bluebird that was feeding 2wk old hatchlings in one of my BB houses. (That was the only time I've ever had Blue Birds in my houses) Anyway, yes the sparrows are everywhere, but this one is actually trying to move into my pen. And I will be better with covering my feed. Thanks, Opa.

Jen! We saw Hannah and Runny at that show! I just didn't know she was your daughter. My kids are looking to get into rabbits for 4-H. My only experience was my "house rabbit" I had as a teenager (yep, Thumper lived in the house and was housebroken). I really like the English Spot, just not sure what breed would be best for beginners.

Yep! That'd be my kid :) There's no denying it either because she looks just like me lol. If you're in the area you should come check out MSRBA's spring convention the first weekend of March at MSU. Big show and lots of great exhibitors to talk you through the breeds. With any breed you'll have your nice ones, mean ones, flighty ones and etc. It's finding one that works for you. I really think Himilayans are a great breed for starting because they're so laid back. But pretty much any rabbit will be as long as they're handled and used to your kids.

We already have the show on our calendars!

Sam, my chickens eat side by side with the sparrows... The sparrows come before the scratch hits the ground. Not much I can do about it, tho. They come right thru the netting.

What an awful day!! The wind is wicked. When is spring coming???

Hannah looks so happy and pround!! Good Job!!
