Found one of my girls today with a swollen eye and plugged nostril. Brought her in, removed blockage (see pic below) and she now in our “chicken hospital” (aka a tote with a chicken wire lid). The swollen eye is on the opposite side as the plugged nostril. We have not had any new additions to the flock.

Haven’t heard sneezing or coughing and her eye is not “bubbly” as noted in many of the respiratory posts. Trying to figure out what this is and what I could use to treat (saw posts about Tiaguard and Tylosin if treating for respiratory)…I don’t have access to a chicken vet so I would need to be able to pick this up at a Tractor Supply or get from Amazon.

She is “pooping” clear liquid…but there’s also a bit of a heatwave here so may not be related.

Hi,

If you have a humidifier or vaporizer, I'd put that near her.

You could put a warm compress on her eye, then rinse it with a saline solution to see if you can see anything wrong. She could have Terramycin or triple antibiotic ointment (without painkiller) in her eye. I see crusties below her eye. Do you think she was tearing (crying) from that? Otherwise, check her over well for mites too.

If you have some Poultry Cell, Nutri-Drench, or other poultry vitamins for their water, I'd do that every other day. A boost will help her fight this.

If you want to treat her with an antibiotic, most of us get them online at one of these places:

If she does have mites what would that indicate? There are teeny tiny bugs on her, not sure if it’s mites or lice or if that would make a difference.

Oh my yes, you need to treat her for those.

I would get some garden powder/permetherin and dust her with that. You can put it in a nylon sock and pat it on her everywhere. Be sure to get her vent area and under her wings. For her face, just put some on a paper towel or something to gently put some on her head and neck. Use gloves or wash after treating her. Try not to breath it or have her breath it

Be sure to put her on those vitamins I mentioned above as those mites can take a lot out of a chicken and even cause their death.
Thank you! I have put the vitamins in her water. She is separated from the other birds. Would the mites cause the nose plug/cheese issue…leading to the swollen eye? She has no other symptoms of respiratory distress, but I’m scared to put her back with her flock. Thinking of treating her just in case… 🙁

I have food grade diatomaceous earth, can I dust her with that?

I cannot see the bugs when checking her over, but I find them on me when handling her….yuck!

That's a good preventative, but it's too slow to kill them. If you can't get permetherin soon, it's better than nothing. We use it too as a preventative, but if we ever had mites, I'd get permetherin.

I've not heard about the nose plug thing. I have heard about mites biting around the eyes causing issues, is why I asked if she might have mites. They can cause allergic reactions as well. I doubt they're responsible for her nose, though, so she still may have an upper respiratory infection. Getting rid of the mites will help a ton!
