Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

You won't get too over run with eggs from 6 silkies (they are bantams).

I'm not planning on any Bantams, I just mentioned that TCS only had assorted bantams last time I was in. Right now, I am planning for 1 comet, 1black Australorp and 1 BO. From what I have read, they are good layers and gentle birds. I just back from a pallet run, in a few minutes, I have to get back out there and start taking them apart. Might start the build tomorrow . I'm going with a 4x4 to force me to stay small and cost effective! My plans are modular so it will be easy to add on next year, if I choose

I scored some great wood and even a wooden crate that might work good for a nesting box.

I went and brought a T-post lifter at Fright Harbor at 12 miles away for $26.00! Thanks so much Raz! I tried it out on one post as soon I got home, and it worked like a charm! Now I am not dreading the chore so much except rolling up the barb wire. Yippee! Oh I stopped by Farm and Home in Plainfield, and they have chicks if anyone is interested. ;) No, I did not get any. :D

Since this is a social thread where we occasionally talk about things other than chickens I thought I would pose a question to which I have photographic proof of the answer. What does Santa Claus do during the spring? If the first person to answer will quote this and then the next person quotes them, and so on, we will be able to easily read all the answers before I post the correct one.

Vacation in New Zealand.

I didn't know that TSC (WL) had chicks yet. I was waiting until next week to go. I like that TSC better than the one in New Hudson.

I should be good and hold off though. I've been offered salmon faverolles later in Spring. Decisions, decisions.

Build the bigger coop. You will end up needing the space even if you don't fill it with chickens. You can partition it smaller a lot easier than making it bigger. Besides, plywood is 4x8 for a reason.

TSC (WL) and (A2) got banty chicks and ducks earlier than was planned from what the managers told me. Last year I wanted to add a few BO & BR layers so, I found out which stores got chicks on what day of the week at the 4 different TSC's in my area (Saline, A2, WL & Howell ) and would just call them to find out what they got in for chicks. It was much less tempting - than to go see in person. At FF&H do you have to buy a minimum of 6 chicks?
