Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I picked up six of the infamous TSC red pullets. Some tell me they are red comets, some say they are ISA Browns. One of them is much lighter in color than the rest. I am concerned that it is a roo. How soon will I know for sure? Do you think TSC will trade me for another chick? I am guessing they won't for bio security reasons.

I've been keeping the chicken math in control but it seems duck math has started to take over. Can't just have 2 pekings so I put in an order for two cayugas at the feed store. I have a feeling that a few ducklings are going to multiply into who knows what; this is just the beginning

Ducks are so fun, geese are even better, no place is complete without a few geese.

I am so tired! For the past few nights I've been doing checks every few hours on my goat doe who was due on the 8th. But she is saving her kidding for today, I think! During the time between the last check and now, her udder has gotten tight and shiny, meaning it has filled up quickly. And she has white discharge. C'mon babies!

My chickens are starting to ramp up egg laying, too! I actually got six eggs yesterday. BUT I accidentally smashed four when I tripped! I'll be checking fertility soon enough on those Araucana eggs, yay!

Her udder is now even bigger! This picture was taken two nights ago, we were visiting the other goat girls.

Extra treats have been sneaking their way to Yoko. A fuji apple was on the menu with this lip smacking picture!

With temperatures in the 50's and the rain, the last of the piles of snow should be gone leaving behind the accumulated detritus from winter. March is with out a doubt the ugliest month of the year. Everything looks dead or dirty. It's lack of appeal was even mentioned in the movie "Jeremiah Johnson". Near the movie's end Robert Redford and Will Geer talk about it being a wet and muddy month.

Yesterday I finally got tired of replacing the wood shaving clogged waterer for the chicks and rigged up a waterer with 4 nipples. It didn't take long for them to figure out how to use it and now I would have to be as concerned with their water.

Over the years that I have been associated with BYC I have tried to help others and pass on what little wisdom I have. It's in that spirit of education that I feel necessary to pass on recently acquired information. Avoid Betty Crockers No Bake Reeses Bars. They could very well be addicting. It's only with great effort am I avoiding them this morning.

Haha, I'm tempted but I'm trying desperately to hold off on anything else until I fence my whole yard.

I bought those Reeses bars once and have been strong enough to avoid them since; they are way too good!

Now I really need to try them...

Good Morning everyone! Yesterday's weather sure was incredible, wasn't it? I found 19 eggs that had been hidden in the Igloo dog house, something had funky odor so yesterday's lovely weather gave me the opportunity to clean that out... But oh the mud here. Mud city! I nearly lost my boot just walking out to the Ladies pen. Which brings me to my question for you Michiganders. Last week I was fighting an ice dam, this week the mud... So it seems to me that I really need to get on the ball for a new pen plan. Plus if I can get the pen area cleaned up and less wet, then hopefully after that I will be able to get the Rainbow Rangers that I've been dreaming about.
So, does anyone have any relatively easy pallet coop plans to offer or can anyone please provide me with links? I found Judy's on here, hers I really like the look, but one might need a little more construction know-how/ability than I personally have. Any help or suggestions are appreciated! Everyone enjoy today. Thanks, Holly

So sorry for your loss. Your thoughts expressed about love and loving and expressing same are on the mark. Much to our dismay. I love you, too. Bob
Thanks Bob, I love you too,,we had a nice visit at HH's last year.

some people use sand in the run, if you have a large run it may be costly though as I think you need to dig down a ways and the sand needs to be changed out every year or so.

I thought there were some pallet coops on line from a year or more ago?? you can build a coop from 2x4's and ply wood easy enough, doesn't need to be fancy and some places that carry wood will cut it for you at a small fee, then you just take it home and nail it together. Nice thing about chickens, They aren't fussy,,,,,build a hoop house and tarp off 1 end, lots of different ideas here

Another day is upon us and for the first time in a long time it's starting out with temperatures in the 40s. Granny is finally feeling well enough that she wants to go to church this morning. It will be the first time since December when her medical problems started. Life can a travail and we need to constantly cherish the moments that we have with our loved ones and make sure they know how important they are to our lives.
Opa, I agree with you we need to cherish all the moments with our loved ones, how wonderful Granny feels well enough to get out.
I must have missed this, What chickens are $2000?? Would be afraid to take them out of the cage.
Thank you and every one for all your well wishes and prayers..........
Kimmie my daughter was using Saboxen, (not spelled right, will look it up) many Dr.s are not familiar with it. It is used off label for pain. Peg said it took her pain from a 20 to a 4or5, it is not as addictive as the strong pain drugs used by most dr. and according to the Dr. that finally diagnosed her, the morphine and stronger drugs used for pain feed the RSD and make it worse. When Peg started on this drug 5 yrs ago there was only 1 Dr. in GR that could write a perscrip. for this med.Now there are a lot more. Dr. Springer was 1 of her Dr.s that wrote this scrp. Stress makes the disease worse and would cause what she called break throughs and pain attacks. Before Saboxen we were in the hospital A LOT after not as often.
So glad Granny is doing better, she is a wonderful person and must be a good fighter, Keeping her in our prayers
Snow, that's great that your daughter found some meds that really helped her, cronic pain is so horrible. You just wonder sometimes if life is worth living. I finaly was givin Neurontin for my nerve pain which helps me greatly, but still have bad days. They can't do anything for my liver, or my esophagus I guess I can't have everything. I am just happy to be here still and can enjoy my family. I have a new member to our family little Talyn he is so wonderful, my daughter who at birth had open heart surgery was thought to not be able to have any babies and guess what Talyn is here, just love the little guy.
Good morning all!! I have made my way back to the land of chicken. We have had a TON if stuff going on!! DH is finally cancer free and everyone is happy and healthy again!
I hope everyone has been well.
Momma, how wonderful your news is about your DH and your back to the land of chicken. Chickens bring me a lot of peace I just love them.

LOL - I've been answering to "Maah" for a long time. It's what our goats call me. Ok, well, I like to think they're calling to me "Maah, Maah!!"... but truth is they probably just want their hay. Silly characters. Lots of fun too.
Maah, I was wondering how you got your name, I never thought of goats making that sound till you said it. I like to think our animals really do reason but I know they don't, it's a good thing to otherwise they might take us over. Then we will be asking them for food, hahahaha
Snowflake - I'm terribly sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is on a family. I lost my two stepsons a few years back 6 weeks apart from auto accidents. One was 16 and the oter one was 11. So, I know first hand how hard it is on a family. Prayers are with you.
R, wow how tragic to lose two loved ones so young and close together. Sorry that happened to you and your husband.
Hello everyone missed alot of days here..

Snowflake So sorry for the loss of your daughter, I just couldnt imagine what your going threw.. Keeping your family in my prayers..

Finally got my taxes done friday..

MommaK Congrats to your husband, that sure is good news.

On all those chicks that grow to full term and die b4 they hatch.. wonder if its to much humidity and when they pip threw the membrane at day 19 if they drown.. I just read this on one of the forums..

Have a good day everyone

tomorrow will be day 7 for my eggs in the bator.. candled a few not all.. and showing signs of fertility.. so hoping i have atleast some hatch out of the 29 eggs..
Nag, I had one that didn't make it out of the shell and one that did and died right away, makes you wonder what happened. One the one hand I feel they are so fragile and on the other I watch the hen knock into them or step on them (she's a Jersey Giant) they just bounce right back.
Is it sunny somewhere today? Grey, gloomy, raining and foggy here.

Kimmie, broodies often do not take being messed with near hatching well at all. If it is close to hatch time, it is best to leave them completely undisturbed until all the eggs that are going to hatch have, and the hen leaves the nest voluntarily. Moving them can cause them to abandon the nest and their babies, sometimes breaking the eggs or killing chicks in their frustration and ire.
Mutt, I wish I was smart enough to have known that before messing with her. I put three new RIR under her and I hope they are alive today I am afraid to go out and look

We have lots of snow here, I just want to see the ground. We got lots of ice and water though makes it tough walking around. Thanks for the warning on the no bakes. I lost 11 pounds from food poisoning last week and my appitite is not the same, which is ok since I am over weight.
Opa, please forgive me I thought Granny was your wife a while back I posted that she was. I thought you looked awfully young to be her husband.
