Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I just saw that on facebook too! You'll have to report back to us on your findings.

from what I've seen on CL it depends on the chicks. Mixed breeds are being sold straight run for $1-3 each. Last year I was able to get started pullets (6wks old) for $5 each. I've seen marans chicks (st run) listed for $4-6 each as day-ol
thank you.. I checked craigslist out here.. the closest place is alpena and there is someone selling for $4. each straight run. non sexed..

does anyone know how much tractor supply sell chicks for.

I cannot imagine how hard it would be to lose a child, no matter how old. You have my deepest sympathy.

I tried to get a bunch of chores done yesterday..... had a list even. and then one of the dogs bit one of the others ear.. she pulled away and tore her poor ear in half! Man, you'd think there was a massacre in the kennel yard and garage. Ears are pretty vascular and she sure made a mess, shaking her head all over the place. So emergency call to vet and surgery (also had her remove a lump and enlarged nipple while they had her under as well) and 450$ later.... I had a big dopey dog to watch over the rest of the day. She kept wanting to get up and walk around but couldn't. Poor silly girl.
DH came home after I got the mess cleaned up and we had some of the beer he brought home from Germany, man that is some tasty stuff!
At least the day ended better than it started!
Mmmmm, love me some Hacker-Pschorr. I have a bottle in the fridge that is now almost 4 years old. My brother had it in there when he was killed and I don't drink it for sentimental reasons

It is grey and rainy today in southern Michigan. Snow is pretty much a distant memory. Our yard looks like a war zone with tons of branches littered around. I am bribing the kids...I will teach them how to drive the lawn tractor, but they must practice by driving around (supervised of course) with the trailer and picking up sticks. We also are going to need to put a new roof on one of the barns (anybody got a spare weekend?). That massive wind we had a few weeks ago ripped off a ton of shingles.

Had a treat yesterday. Our resident pair of Sandhill Cranes were back. The neighbors had a barn fire last summer and the cranes took off with all the commotion and we didn't see them the rest of the year. We were delighted that they had returned to nest in our pasture again. They stroll around our yard as if they owned the place. They don't even pay any attention to the 97# dog.

Anyone have any experience with 4-H market birds? My daughter wants to have some this year and I have zero knowledge/experience. I know that the deadline for ordering is coming up so we have to make a decision soon if we are doing it this year. Any resources that you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.

What a gloomy day. Misting/raining and just ugly. And oh, so muddy!

Sam, let us know how your egg turns out!

My brothers only drink German beer. they have their stores in the Chicago area that sells it.

Hello, fellow Michiganders...I haven't posted in awhile but I have a desperate situation that I need help with.

A close friend has a BLUE AMERICAN GANDER that she needs to rehome. It's breeding season now and she's tired of his "boy" antics. He is from Holderreads, and I recall that she paid for the "premium" exhibition quality with the trio she ordered. She will be keeping the females.

Anyone interested who can provide a really good home for this guy, PM me.

Help getting my silkie (pretty sure it's her) to lay her eggs IN the nest boxes? She has no trouble getting onto the roost bars, and the boxes are lower than those, so I know they're not too high for her. 4 or 5 times a week I'm finding this nice small-ish cream colored egg in the corner of the coop. I blocked off the area way back under the nest boxes where she WAS laying, so now she's just laying right next to that spot. I can go out there and find 2 or 3 other eggs in the nest boxes, but her darn egg is still on the floor.

Are the other chickens allowing her to use the box?
I have no idea. She's not on the bottom of the pecking order, surprisingly enough (the polish, the houdan, the banty brahama, and 2 EEs are on the bottom of the order). I only have 5 or 6 laying, and they're making use of 3 different nest boxes. I hadn't considered them not 'allowing' her to use a box. If that's the case, how do I address that issue?
