Well it has been awhile since I posted here, I had rescued 9 chickens and swore I only wanted 6. Since then I lost two of them, learned a lot about caring for chickens, became a chicken proctologist , chicken dietician, comforter of the flock. I have had sick chickens living in my basement, and as I am writing this I have four Ameracuna (supposed to be Araucanuna ) chicks living in the bathroom. (pictures will be posted) I have room for three more chicks so I am looking for Buff Orpington or Gold Lace Wyandotte chicks. If anyone has any pullets at about 3 weeks old let me know. I may have to change my name.

Has anyone here done sand in their coop instead of shavings? We're using sand instead of shavings in the brooder, and it's so easy to clean! I'm considering switching the (small) coop, too. Any concerns about our climate and sand?

Another cold morning is underway and as always I am grateful to be here waiting for the sunrise. Last night David and I went to the visitation for the wife and mother of the father and son barber shop we go to. She was only 72 years old, a fact that reminds me of how fleeting our time is on the earth. The huge number of people in attendance offering their solace to the family certainly was a testament to the character of the deceased and the family. Both the father and the son were handling their grief quite well as everyone extended their sympathy and the emphasis was on what had been shared rather than what was lost.
