Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

First two hatched about 8 o'clock last night - a blonde silkie/EE mix and a BO/EE mix. So COOL watching them push and roll their way out of the eggs. My 16 yo DS watched it happening with me, and I think he was just as excited, texting his friends and taking pictures. During the night 2 more hatched - BA/EE mixes, and there are at least three more - 'pure' EE - working on it right now. Nothing yet on the Araucana, but not sure how good the fertility could be there yet. Those boys are still kinda young, and it is a breed with it's own built in difficulties on fertility and hatching.

Pictures later after work tonight or tomorrow (day off).

And yes, I'm already collecting eggs for the next batch...

Congratulations on the new babies! I hope you do get some araucana. Fyi...there will be some EE eggs going into my incubator this weekend ;)

Amy, I would be concerned that sand would radiate cold in the winter, and would freeze solid. Fiber beddings, while they may still freeze up, act as insulation and as a heat sink. Maybe in the summer it would be OK. I prefer the deep litter method.

Good morning MI.

It's Thursday!!

As much as I love the weekends... I like Thursdays as well. Every Thursday we go to my grandma's house for dinner. She's 84 and an amazing person! She lives there with her son (my uncle) who is completely blind. My aunt goes to her house each Thursday (well, many times a week, but definitely Thursdays), and takes my grandma to the grocery store to do her shopping and whatever other thing she needs done in town. Then my aunt will cook whatever new amazing recipe she found. We all go over there after work (my family, my nephew & his wife, sometimes my sister, & my parents (when they're not in AZ), and sometimes cousins, etc) and spend the evening with them. I love it! Spending time over there is the highlight of our week. I don't know how much time on this earth my grandma has left and I want to spend as much of it with her as I can. Not only for me... but for her, and my uncle, the rest of my family... and my kids. It's a good thing for our 3 kids to see as well. We're teaching them family values, love, and what things are really important in life by example. They look forward to Thursday dinner just as much as the rest of us. So much better than the video games, or TV, or whatever else.

It's Thursday!!

Oh, and completely unrelated... - I ordered a new Mini Maglite Pro off ebay to help candle my Barred Rock eggs that are in the incubator. I have 2 super bright LED flashlights... and that just is not good enough. Hopefully the mini-mag pro will work better... 226 Lumens.

Geeze! Glad everyone was okay. I have nightmares about my husband getting in an accident on the freeway. His drive to work is about 35miles one way and when you think about it, twice a day, five days a week... So far the worst that has happened is that he nodded off one morning and scraped an orange barrel (that was years ago when he commuted from Bedford to Ypsi or Canton or Jackson to Canton... can't remember which job exactly but one of those commutes anyway. He, not my kids, will be the lone cause of gray hair.
I hear ya. I am the commuter in my family. I drive 56 miles one way, 5 days a week. I feel like I drive grooves in 96/696! Last week was the first time I nodded off in the morning. Now I drive with the heat off and radio turned up!

Definitely do!

Here are my newly hatched BO/EE mixes. Hatched on day 20 within hours of each other. Six in all and very active little buggers. They're the chick mafia. Shortly after hatching they decided to try and prevent the other breeds from hatching, I'd swear to it. Stinkers.

You should come up with little mobster names for them like mad chick or chick Capone. Chickpone? Lol
