Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So we're back from North Carolina :) I had my 30th birthday while there and went deep sea fishing with my brother and husband. We caught some nice size false albacore (sp?). On the way home I got to meet up with a couple fellow silkie breeders in Burlington,NC and picked up some nice blacks and a white pullet. I also found someone who has splash showgirls and picked up the only one she had left. It's a cute little thing :) Now I'll have splash, patridge, blue, black and white showgirls in the flock! I'm also setting about 6.5 dozen silkie (and a few showgirl) eggs tonight! I'm hoping to over flow the brooder in a few weeks LOL

Happy belated birthday!!!

If i do any movement over my bird's head, they think it's a hawk! But i do kinda cup their heads with my hand, so as to feel like they are in their mom's wing. Works every time, even the angriest rooster will calm (at least temporarily) When i hold them i also squish them a tad against me, and sometimes put their heads under my elbow. Could be why they like pettings? They associate it with the momma feeling.

I haven't tried it, but the falling asleep trick i heard about is putting their head under their wing and quickly do a clockwise motion holding them away from your body, and they are supposed to conk right out.
Maybe it has something to do with how your hand comes over them. I bring my hand in at a low level and they don't seem to panic at all.

I had read that Sebrights are pretty flighty so I've been trying to get them calmed and used to be handled. So far they seem to be getting used to me. Several will hop onto my hand but I often have some mealworms for them.

Welcome back you two! Going Country, I'm in Davison, not far from you.

Man, it is so frigid out there!!

I WANT SPRING!!!!!! WELL, I WANT WARMER WEATHER TO COME!

key1969 thank you for your reply. I've heard that about the Calls. My Daughter really wants some and she convinced us by rolling them into her science project. Her project is titled Natural v. Artificial incubation, we have a Muscovy that has volunteered to be the "natural" incubator! The second choice is runners, our runners of course are not bein cooperative! Hopefully we will manage to collect enough eggs.

Good morning Michigan, Sorry to hear about all the bad weather! I am down in southern Florida for a little trip. I will spare you all the weather report. My friend back home who does chores when I am gone (she keeps her horses at my place) says every time I come down here there is a big winter storm, so it is probably my fault that you are all having snow.

I am actually here because my boyfriend slipped on a job he was on in Alabama and hurt his knee, apparently quitey badly. It has taken a week for the insurance company to approve an MRI, despite a doctor's order. Rather than stay alone in Alabama he was able to drive down here (it is his left leg so he can more or less still drive). After being put off repeatedly for approval for diagnostics - apparently if you are in Alabama you have trouble figuring out that they have MRI machines in other states - yesterday I actually got on the phone with the insurance handler who immediately said "I can't talk to you!!!". I said, you don't have to talk just listen - then went on to describe the injury and that his leg was getting worse, that he could not use it at all, and that he was in a great deal of pain and that they had denied him service for a week while they did an "investigation" and shuffled paperwork. He may have seen the light after reading between the lines where the words "lawsuit for contribution to serious injury and unnecessary pain and suffering" were written, and Surprise! An MRI was scheduled within an hour.

It is so frustrating to have to deal with people who don't seem to want to know about the person they are supposed to helping, and instead just try to save their company money by delaying or declining service. We just want his leg fixed - he is understandably anxious that this injury may keep him from his work. Jerks.
That's terrible and if its considered workers comp, its only going to get worse. Be prepared to hire a lawyer. Please bring some war, weather back with you.

1muttsfan, It's so hard to deal with any illness then you got to deal with the insurance or comp or whatever you already don't feel well they don't care. My little hospital visit a few weeks ago cost over $7000!!!!! For ten hours in the er then from 10pm to 6pm the next day in a room. Well for some reason the hospital said that they were obsvering me so now my insurance says they are not paying it all. I was pretty sure being in a room made me admitted. Crazy. Hope he gets all better soon, it also depends on are how fast he well mend

At 7:02 the sun will be directly over the equator. The Vernal Equinox. The first day of spring. Yeah, right. Today's forecast cold, windy, single digit wind chills, snow showers. Didn't anyone tell Mother Nature. We are 20 degrees below normal and I'm tired of winter.

The coffee is ready so grab yourself a cup and we can all sit here and grumble about the things we can't do anything about. Maybe after a cup or two and the sun makes it appearance we can talk about how lucky were are to be able to do all that we can.

Has anyone besides me noticed that their wallet is getting thicker? Mine certainly is and not with money. Saturday's mail included correspondence from the Department of Veteran Affairs that included an ID card. While beneficial, it's one more piece of plastic I need to carry. Seems like I am constantly adding a new card to those I need to carry. Drivers license, fire department retirees card, Blue Cross card, Social Security card, Medicade care, Conceal Carry card, library card, bank ATM card, Master Card, the list continues to grow. In order to get the best possible pricing stores are now issuing cards. Costco, Speedy rewards gas card with it accompanying prepaid gas card. Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid all want you to present a card or pay more if you don't have it. I even was asked if I had a rewards card when I went to Menards last Friday. Then when Granny and I stopped at Hobby Lobby to pick up some craft items for her the cashier asked if I had my card. This has got to stop. Before you know it I am going to need to hire someone just to help me lift my wallet.
But you don't qualify for help because you are still "mobile".... what they said when Dr said I needed help with chores at home. I can put one foot in front of the other so am 'not disabled enough'. See you can pull a wagon for all your cards so you don't need help. hahaha And oh yeah... here is your permit card for that wagon full of cards. NOW if you give me some eggs maybe I can.... oh wait you need a permit for that egg too!

Oh don't get me wrong, Calls are wonderful birds, especially for kids! I can't tell you how many people have never heard of them but when they see them they want some themselves. Unfortunately right now I have 5 males and 1 female and she only lays about 2-3 times a month, if that so I can't attempt to hatch any out to sell...or to even up my ratio. None of my muskoveys are laying right now or I'd offer to send her some!

I know what you mean about the store cards! First, it annoys me that I need to be part of their "special club" to get good deals - just give me the deals darn it! What I have found however, is that most places you can just use your phone number instead of having to carry a card around. You basically enter your phone number in the to credit card swipe machine and it recognized your account. Must better than having a key ring full of little tabs or a wallet full of cards.

I have been dealing with a major sciatica issue for the last two days...what a pain (literally!).

Saw this and thought it was pretty accurate!

Oh boy do I have a problem with this. Plus all the discount cards hooked to my car keys! I don't like purses so I just carry a wallet but I noticed too when I had to shop for a new wallet last year that they seem to be getting smaller. It used to be I could keep $5+ in change in the coin section. Not anymore!

Speaking of rants, I wish we could go back to the old way of calculating how car registrations renewals. My birthday is next month so I got the notice in the mail today and it's a 20 year old car yet it's $20 more than our truck that's 16 years old. At least this year they didn't charge me for the disabled plate like they mistakenly did last year. Every time I turn around the rules change!
