Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

There was an interesting article in today’s in National Post (Canadian news), entitled “Doctors call for ban of antibiotic use in farm animals as drug-resistant human infections hit ‘dangerous level’. This of course will directly affect the chicken farmers over there, as the article points out. The European Union has already banned prophylactic use of antibiotics in agriculture. I guess that would include the use of Terramycin in chickens. Hopefully Canada will not be that drastic and decide to restrict only antibiotics that are also used in humans.

FYI

The TSC in Charlotte is selling all older chicks and ducklings for 50 cents. All newer ones are $1.00 off. They have over 600 now and are expecting another 1200 in the next 2 days. We just left there and they are in a real pinch to get rid of them ASAP!!

I'm looking for Call duck hatching eggs ASAP, my daughter wants to hatch them out for a project at school and we have to set them by Thursday. Can anyone help?

Call ducks eggs are extremely hard to hatch out. I've had calls for years and although I adore them, they are difficult. The females also don't lay eggs very often so when they do the eggs are usually expensive. I've bought several batches of eggs over the years and only had a handful hatch. I wish you luck!

I all! I'm in mid-Michigan. I was on a few years ago (totally forgot my user name/email and my password!) so I'm starting a new profile. I have 13 hens (all different breeds) and 1 RIR rooster (Elvis), a Morgan mare, 2 mutts, and a wonderful loving husband and two amazing daughters.

I'm with you all in wishing the warm weather would hurry and arrive. Anxious to start working on the yard and get the garden ready.

Have a blessed evening!

I got 3 ducklings from TSC a few weeks ago because they were only 75 cents even though I swore I would never get anything from TSC again. I got 3, two are huge already but one is only about a 1/4 of the size of the other two and I got them all the same time. She's almost the same size as a Call duck. She eats and drinks and plays like the others. I guess I'll see what happens.

Wow what a coincidence, I was gone for a few years myself and came back yesterday. Well, welcome back!

So we're back from North Carolina :) I had my 30th birthday while there and went deep sea fishing with my brother and husband. We caught some nice size false albacore (sp?). On the way home I got to meet up with a couple fellow silkie breeders in Burlington,NC and picked up some nice blacks and a white pullet. I also found someone who has splash showgirls and picked up the only one she had left. It's a cute little thing :) Now I'll have splash, patridge, blue, black and white showgirls in the flock! I'm also setting about 6.5 dozen silkie (and a few showgirl) eggs tonight! I'm hoping to over flow the brooder in a few weeks LOL

Don't forget I have the 1st of your eggs in the bator going in lockdown tonight- they are due to hatch this weekend!!! And the others are about 1/2 way to lockdown!!

Could be why they like pettings? They associate it with the momma feeling.

I haven't tried it, but the falling asleep trick i heard about is putting their head under their wing and quickly do a clockwise motion holding them away from your body, and they are supposed to conk right out.

Good morning Michigan, Sorry to hear about all the bad weather! I am down in southern Florida for a little trip. I will spare you all the weather report. My friend back home who does chores when I am gone (she keeps her horses at my place) says every time I come down here there is a big winter storm, so it is probably my fault that you are all having snow.

I am actually here because my boyfriend slipped on a job he was on in Alabama and hurt his knee, apparently quitey badly. It has taken a week for the insurance company to approve an MRI, despite a doctor's order. Rather than stay alone in Alabama he was able to drive down here (it is his left leg so he can more or less still drive). After being put off repeatedly for approval for diagnostics - apparently if you are in Alabama you have trouble figuring out that they have MRI machines in other states - yesterday I actually got on the phone with the insurance handler who immediately said "I can't talk to you!!!". I said, you don't have to talk just listen - then went on to describe the injury and that his leg was getting worse, that he could not use it at all, and that he was in a great deal of pain and that they had denied him service for a week while they did an "investigation" and shuffled paperwork. He may have seen the light after reading between the lines where the words "lawsuit for contribution to serious injury and unnecessary pain and suffering" were written, and Surprise! An MRI was scheduled within an hour.

It is so frustrating to have to deal with people who don't seem to want to know about the person they are supposed to helping, and instead just try to save their company money by delaying or declining service. We just want his leg fixed - he is understandably anxious that this injury may keep him from his work. Jerks.

That's terrible! I'm glad you got it worked out. Bring some of the sunny weather back with you when you return!
