congrats for the new chicks.sorry you only got 1 naglady, hope it survives
chick is doing good.. i removed the membrane that is attach to the umbilicus from the shell.. so now i lightened the load, the chick is trying to stand up now..

was hoping to have atleast 2 chicks. so when i integrate them with my chicks that are about 8 days old, it would be alone.. will have to see what happens.
will wait till it is definately stronger. my older chicks are doing great.

Hey everyone. My husband bought 6 chicks from TSC and they tossed in two extra... I really only wanted two more lol. So anyway, I have some chicks to find homes for if anyone is interested. One australorp and the rest are isa browns, or so I was told. They are yellow. Im thinking like $2 each? Idk, I just need them gone. They're outgrowing my makeshift brooder!

I have 6 hens with babies. 3 in the garage, and 3 in the coop. I only block them off long enough for the eggs to finish hatching, and then its up to the moms when they want to take them out. I have one hen who had her chicks out the day after the last one hatched. AND I have one whose chicks are 2 weeks old and she has not left the coop at all.

There is a lump on the neck, on the opposite side to the direction it is cocked... He can hold it up straight, but as the day progresses, he get worse. Then after a rest, he's better... I honestly thought he'd be dead yesterday morning, the morning after he was injured. But nope, I put him in the garage, separate from everyone, but he wanted out, he got out, he went back to his pen in the coop, with hs girls, but then he got out and freaking Rod attacked him again, and I found him walking in circles, with his head upside down facing up... hard to explain. BUT then i kept him got him in the garage again, and made sure he couldn't get out at all, and his head was almost normal, cocked to that side, and only occassionally bad to the point like he was in the vid where he stumbled, but he still wants to cozy up to the girls...

Would maybe some sort of flexible splint?? I am open to ideas...
That is so strange his head like it's dislocated. How can that be?

I agree, I wouldn't give him a second chance. I trust the roos I have right now with my boys. I always tell them though, to NEVER run past the roos, or towards them. They may feel threatened and attack. I also never handle the roosters like I do the hens. Once I know if they are pullets or cockerels, I leave the cockerels alone. I feed them, pull them off the roost at night and check them over if there is a concern, but I don't pet/grope them. The silkies are a different matter though. LOL. They are free game. LOL. And then there is Pat the Rat. HIM I am sure, if he could, would be an attack roo. He's just too short, too feathered, and too teeny tiny to do damage to any other bird let alone try and get people. He sure tries though. I also don't have any roo in the yard that is over 1.5 years right now. Mr. Fluffers, my first faverolles rooster, he was nearly 4 when he died after a coon attack, he was very good. Never attacked a person, never showed any aggression either. That's why I love them. Good birds. Well, except the one that Opa got. That one, not such a nice guy. Well, anyway...
Nova, thanks for the roo lesson, I didn't know we are not suppose to pick them up, makes since though that they may feel like they are being attacked how bout when I pick up a hen the roo's get upset and make noise.

Thanks all. Yeah, that's the hard part - right in the middle of the afternoon. That raccoon won't do it again but I feel like I don't dare take my eyes off my chickens anymore. Hoping this egg hatches. Itll most likely be a sf/ee cross since she was always with my silver ee. Either way I will definitely get more SF to try to get one similar to her.
Well I hope that coon is dead! I can't believe it came out during the day. That's why I want another dog that I will train to take care of the chickens. I am so sorry you lost your beloved hen.

It's soo nice out! I am thinking of taking my chicks outside for the first time. They are now 3 1/2 weeks old. It's 50 degrees in their brooder, away from the warmth. It's warmer than that outside. Can I take them out in the garden for a little bit of scratching? They fly around the brooder like crazy. I am a little concerned that I will have a hard time catching them outdoors. Should I give it a shot anyhow?

Wish me luck, I have to go into TSC for some supplies. I WILL not come home with 6 more chicks. I have 6 now and the coop will accomodate 16. LOL If they have BR and BL it will be a lost cause for me LOL

Yes, he's a dead raccoon. Very dead. We caught 17 coons last year plus a couple possum, all at night, in our live trap. We put the trap away for the winter and hadn't gotten it back out since we're still quite snow covered and it tends to freeze the lock. It became a game of catch-and-release-a-hen last fall because the girls kept getting in it. So we put it away since we were no longer catching critters in it. It's back out now and ready. I see they have live traps on sale at TSC or FF&H this week - may buy another. I won't use any other type of trap for fear of catching a chicken or worse yet a kid. I will use my pitchfork or .22 though if it's handy ;)

I truly believe that much of a chicken's personality is inherited. I love all mine to pieces (yes, gasp, even the roos) but the ones that are human oriented from the start (seek out attention actively, without food involved) seem to stay that way. The two daughters i hatched from my pet hen, the one who never strayed far from my feet, are dolls. I wish i could have hatched more, i would have gladly had a whole flock of them.

Rooster on the other hand, was very smart and aside from spring and the mid-summer heat was a good boy, hugged his neck around my shoulder and came to ME to be held. BUT during those times...... well i was the only one who could be around him, and i certainly wouldn't have allowed any kids to be. His sons mothered with the same sweet hen, with the sweet daughters, tempermental and one of them got bad at only a month old!

Moral of the long story? Well, hoping that one last egg from the terrible coon raid hatches and she carries her mother's sweetness

*********Oh and clothes for the chickens...........********* i may be one of those crazies yet, LOL. I wanna make her a little dress and a bloomer-ey diaper, and wish that i could take her to the old folk's home for a visit. I bet that would bring a grin to some of them! The "visiting goat" made me wishful. My little hen loves to be held and i bet she would make a fine "therapy" pet.
