Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Kimmie, I chose not to handle the cockerels, I want them to have a healthy respect... I want my boys to be Leary of the roos. Don't pester, startle them. I warn them that the roos can think they are a threat and try and protect. I only pick up the hens that are willing. If they make a fuss,I leave them. I don't wimp around my birds at all. I've booted a roo off a hen, I even held a roo down to stop them from picking on another roo, as in Fritz the Jerk being a jerk. Aside from The conflict between Rod and Florus, but Rod being fine with Fritz and Pat the Rat... I do think its because Florus is bigger than Rod. Rod wants to be sure Florus knows his place. Rod would prefer it under ground. Lol. I also eat any roos at the first sign of people aggression. No chance to out grow it... No, its the teenage/hormones excuse. Maybe that's why I have nice boys.

I don't handle my roos, either. My thinking follows Nova's in that there needs to be a healthy respect of space. I don't bother them and they don't bother me. I have had to break up a fight and hold a rooster down, as well, but it's only done when necessary and I've had no problems with any of them afterwards.

I had a chick hatch under my broodie and I thought it was dead and went to reach in to pick it up because I saw something black way back in the nest and sort of moved it and got side tracked by something esle, well it turned out to be a chick I know it was just laying there dead looking but anyway it finally was moving around but strangely sort of hopping for a few days then finally started to walk after 4 days. Its ok now but still is smaller.

Just sitting here thinking about all that I need to do today is getting me tired before the day has even begun. I need to clean the dropping trays in the coop and also clean the nest boxes. I've got 14 chicks in a brooder sitting in my workshop and they are starting to stink the place so they need to be taken out while I replace the shavings.

Also the apple trees need to be pruned and sprayed. That project alone is going to take several hours. Yep, it's going to be a long day.
