Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Can someone who gets their birds processed "professionaly" (in other words, pays someone to do it for them) shoot me a pm? I have a couple of questions.

I was naughty and peeked at my eggs in the incubator today. Couldn't see into the Marans eggs I got from DMRippy because they are too dark for my flashlight, but I could see into my EE eggs and they're looking great so far!

Unfortunately some shelters have rules putting all pitbull-type dogs to sleep and if you try to drop one off no matter what the reason, they make you pay the euth. fee before they will take the dog. There are serious problems with our local governments as well as the morons who dump their animals.

raz sorry to hear..

today was a banner egg laying day.. first time i got 4 eggs in one day out of my 5 hens..they were slacking when i had the rooster with them, now they must be happy without him because they are laying.

RaZ, sorry.

This morning my coop was an Island... or a coop with a moat...

My coop is no longer an island, or has a moat. It is now a flood plain. There is high ground in the run, but all the edges are a swamp. Under all the coops, where the birds would normally get their dirt baths on, it is mud pit central. The big coop, the original winter run turned coop, has several inches of water. Had one nest box flooded. I am assuming that happened after some eggs were laid, with the down pour from this after noon. The several down pours that is. SO, some of those heavy butt skids I picked up last year to make a floor in that coop, then decided I hated it, prefered the dirt, took half back out, well, I put several back in so that the chicks wouldn't drown trying to get into the coops tonight, and to try and keep the chickens from getting soaked as well. God what a mess in there. My back yard has NEVER flooded like this. I am thinking I may build a berm all the way around, OR add in several yards of soil in all the low places in the run, bring it up several inches... I don't know. I just know it is freaking awful. I hope it dries up soon...

AND to top it all off, I don't have muck boots. I have to walk through water that is several inches above my ankles to get to the coop, and yeah.

OH, and guess what? It is still raining here in good old Holland!

I have a broody that scolds every time I walk near her, I do not want a broody right now as I have chicks ordered and I really don't want to order Mareks vac. right now. the chicks ordered will be already vac. Hope they come soon then I can just slip them under her. Every night I take all the eggs and put her on the ground and she sits there and yells at me.
An Animal Control office I knew swore by hot dogs as the key to making friends with stray dogs.

No snow or rain or other precipitation here at all the last few days, but it is very windy today and supposed to get 6" or snow tonight and tomorrow. We shall see.
OH, I'm sorry, I wish the rain would stop but I am glad it is not snow!!!!
((bang bang bang!) I'm calling to order the meeting of the chicken addicts...

Love all the chicks,, so soft and fuzzy
I'm going to be right there with you soon! Look at the crests (or whatever you call them on silkies) those little peepers have! Wowza!

A question about cooking: I'm picking up my 2 roos from the processor today. I understand that the meat should rest before we cook it.....can it "rest" in brine? I love the flavor of my turkey brine recipe, and have used it on grocery store chickens quite a few times....these boys were about 7mo old, so I'm thinking that brining and slow roasting will be the way to go about this.....
will you share your brine recipe?

I have mole tunnels collapsing and filling with water, some of them seep to be draining off to never land??

But yours still sounds worse,
