Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Cute chicks!

Welcome mrcrush!

I think I'm going to have to confine my chickens to the coop and small run. They insist on wandering out into the field (which we own), lured by the left-over field corn. But the farmer just sprayed it with fertilizer and lime.

I herd them, entice them, but they just keep going right back out there.

Thanks Everyone! We just had a hawk scare! A small cooper's hawk was circling my yard while my girls were free ranging. Luckily I found 2 of them in the coop and 2 under the deck. I'll have to pay a little more attention while they're free ranging. And maybe let my dog out with them!

Welcome new folks. Nice to see more people from SE MI joining the group. Some of us are neck deep in fighting to keep our backyard flocks. There are 3 criminal cases pending here in Garden City. There may be more but the court will not comment on "open cases".

Wow, that's not cool. I read somewhere on BYC that Michigan Law states chickens are fine to own. Then the question becomes, does local trump state or state trump local...? hmmmm

Oh, I love chicks! I can't wait till spring and I pen my breeds separately for a few months to get pure eggs!

Fancy, that rooster in the last pic is the one I was asking if you were interested in... Only now, I think I want to breed him to my Loralie, Little pretty, and a few other girls thrown in. The other boy is going to get Beulah, Sheh-Sheh (She's white faverolle, want to see what I will get from that combo), and a few other mutt girls. They'll each get four girls to start with, and I figure with in 3 weeks, I should get pure eggs from the 4 hens. Then I'll be up for trading to bring in new blood.

If you are going totally non-electric for winter water, i highly suggest rubber dishes. They are sold at TSC and are a kind of rubber tire material. The ice sticks to the other dishes, and they can crack when you are trying to chip it out.

The rubber dishes bend, and the ice don't stick so all you have to do is flex the dish and it pops right out!
