Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

The regulations preventing the sale of chicks or baby rabbits as pets are intended to prevent the annual mass sales at Easter - and the resulting flood of bunnies and chicks that die from lack of proper care or are simply disposed of or abandoned when they are not so little anymore.

I've been going through City Ordinances for the area we may want to move into when we buy property to see which allow chickens and which do not.

So many of these are worded stupidly,
I've been working on this for well over a year. Some local ordinances are "Twilight Zone" absurd. Like the one city here in Wayne County that allows chickens but bans taking eggs from them. Or Macomb County with the city that requires 8 acres for 3 chickens but a horse is OK on 2 acres.

Chicken Gun

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch standard 4 pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.

When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two, and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.

The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the U.S. scientists for suggestions.

NASA responded with a one-line memo --

"Defrost the chicken." (True Story)

It would depend on what time. I work long shifts on monday/wed/fri and the 12th falls on the middle one. Lansing is a 2h+ drive for me too, so if it is between 9am and 9pm, I can't make it.
Would it be possible to send a letter or email with someone to show my support, or would my actual physical presence be required to add to our influence?

Went to the Caledonia feed mill today and though I really like it there, they sold me feed for my sheep that was actually goat feed with added copper (terrible for sheep)! I had to take it back and exchange it for a bag of plain old oats. It's a treat I offer my sheep, one handful every day. They had no idea it was unsafe for sheep... hello?

Anyway, I cleaned out the coop, added more wood chips. I think I'm set for a while. It's gotta be over a foot deep in there and it's not even composting, dry almost everywhere, all the way to the floor, except for where there's a small leak in the roof and under their waterer. I built a poop board the other day, making a 2x4 frame and covering it with some of that plastic wall board (the stuff I like to use for signage). So far so good on that. I made a scraper for it too that can reach all the way into the corner, screwing a large plaster scraper to a short pole. I will make another board for under the rafter they like to roost on, a 1x8 or wider with a hinge on the wall-side and a hook on the other that will allow me to lower it to scrape it. Then I should be virtually poop-free in there. As for the leak in the roof, gotta take care of that too. Not sure where it's coming from though, so we'll have to try to figure that out, always the trick.

Everyone have a nice weekend, despite the dismal weather (albeit warm right now...)

had some posts to reply to but they got eaten by my PC

ha ha ha ha ha..... You just know some poor shmuck got the messege and had to relay it to the boss............ boy, i'd have been quaking! lol.

Makes me wonder if you can still purchase land outside of city limits in this day and age without having to buy 100's of acres. Any suggestions on how to go about it?
Yes, there are lots of small parcels out for sale on land contract even! But then you will be in the same boat as me. I technically live in an apartment for now, but my chickens live on family's property a few miles out of town. To drive out there costs at least $5 a day! Now those are some expensive eggs.

Mine are pets, so i so far am doing it but i can't recommend if you have any other way. (Too expensive, hard during the heat of the summer when you can't leave because you have to put them away, during the winter you always have to wonder if the water is ok, how is everyone doing) etc.
